(The science in simple language)<\/h2>\n<p>The story begins in 1969, when Bob Gore discovered that if you sharply stretch polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE \u2013 the same material as Teflon), you get a strong microporous structure. The secret of the membrane is in the numbers: it has about <strong>1.4 billion pores per square centimeter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here comes the ingenious physics that makes your <strong>Gore-Tex technology<\/strong> so effective:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Waterproofness:<\/strong> These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water.
