Just an hour's drive away lie two villages that don't just preserve history - they are history itself.

Leshten and Kovachevitsa are architectural jewels where every stone tells a legend, and the air smells of pine and homemade food.

1. First stop: Leshten – Flintstone's House and panoramic views

The journey begins with a climb to Leshten. As soon as you enter, you will notice the restored old houses with thatched roofs (made of large stone slabs) that shine in the sun.

The architecture: The houses here are in the "Koprivshtna type" style, but with a local Rhodopean flavor. They are white, with wooden verandas and narrow cobblestone streets. The biggest attraction, however, is „"The Clay House"“. It looks like something out of the Flintstones cartoon and is a favorite place for photos – there isn't a single right angle in it!

The spirit of the village: Leshten is a place for contemplation. The view of Pirin from here is one of the most beautiful you can see in Bulgaria.

The Pub in Leshten: The Taste of Tradition

You can't visit Leshten and miss the famous pub at the entrance to the village. It is located in an old authentic barn and offers a coziness that is difficult to describe.

Must try: Homemade mekitsi with honey and cheese, beans in a pot, kavarma or local snacks. Here the products are from the gardens of the people in the area, and the attitude will make you feel like you are visiting old friends.

2. Second stop: Kovachevitsa – Stone Town

We continue another 7 km up the mountain to the end of the road. Literally. Kovachevitsa is an architectural reserve, in which there is not a single building that is not in tune with the general appearance.

The architectural marvel: Unlike Leshten, where the houses are white, in Kovachevitsa they are entirely made of stone and dark wood. They call it „"Bulgarian Hollywood"“, because dozens of iconic films (such as "Measure for Measure") were filmed here.

The tall houses: Since space was limited, the craftsmen built upwards - some houses reached 4 floors, which was a true engineering achievement for the 18th and 19th centuries.

St. Nicholas Church: Built in 1847, it impresses with its bell tower and incredible frescoes.

3. Where to stay: The coziest places to stay

If one day is not enough for you and you want to wake up to the sound of bells, here are the most atmospheric places:

In Leshten:

The clay house – The most extravagant choice. The house is for just two and offers a uniquely romantic experience.

Leshten houses – A complex of several restored old houses with modern amenities and verandas looking directly at the peaks of Pirin.

Guest House "Vaya"„ – Ideal for families. The interior is made of natural materials, and the fireplace in the living room is the heart of the house.

In Kovachevitsa:

The Wild Duck House„ – One of the most famous places. It has a legendary tavern, and the rooms have heavy wooden beams and authentic rugs.

Guest House "White House"„ – It has one of the most beautiful panoramic terraces in the village. The owners welcome you with homemade sweets and herbal teas.

House "Lazarus House"„ – A massive stone building that brings the tranquility of centuries past.

4. Nature Walk: The Best Eco-Trails

"Blue Pool" Waterfall: It is located in the canyon of the Kanina River. The trail starts just before the entrance to Kovachevitsa. It is of medium difficulty and the walk takes about 1 hour in one direction. The river has formed beautiful cascades and small ponds with blue-green water.

Chapel "St. George" (above Leshten): An easy 20-minute walk uphill from the village center. From here you can see the best panorama to the entire region and the Pirin mountain range, especially at sunset.

The Thracian sanctuary "Gradishte": It is located near the village of Dolno Dryanovo. A landscaped park with paths where you will see huge rock formations in the shapes of human heads, turtles and fish. The tour takes about 40 minutes.

The old road between the villages: You can walk the distance between Leshten and Kovachevitsa on foot along the dirt road (about 1.5 – 2 hours). This way you will completely escape the noise of cars.

5. 📸 The most photogenic places (Instagram points)

The Clay House (Leshten): Shoot from a low angle for a fairytale effect.

Sunset from the Chapel: The light on Pirin is magical.

The cobblestone "tunnels" in Kovachevitsa: The narrow streets between the high stone walls create a unique perspective.

Wooden gates: Every gate in Kovachevitsa is a work of art with wrought iron and geraniums.

The rock profile in "Gradishte": Shoot it right from the side to highlight the human face.

Useful for the traveler: The plan in brief

Information

Details

Route from Bansko

Bansko -> Gotse Delchev -> Garmen -> Leshten -> Kovachevitsa

Distance / Time

About 55 km (about 1 hour and 10 minutes by car)

Shoes

Comfortable and stable because of the authentic cobblestone.

Scope

Weak in places - ideal for a "digital detox".

Bonus stop

village of Ognyanovo (mineral pools) or village of Garmen (century-old plane trees).

This escape will fill you with energy that only the mountains and the authentic Bulgarian spirit can give.
