The next morning, getting out of bed is a mission impossible, and walking down the hotel stairs turns into a comical dance that the locals call the "Pirin walk.".

Pirin is a steep mountain. Unlike the gentle slopes of Vitosha or Stara Planina, here the elevation gain is sharp, and the descents are endless. This puts a strain on the muscles in a specific way. But does the mountain have to hurt? Here's how to reduce the damage and why the "preventive pill" is a bad idea.

1. Why does Pirin “hurt” so much?

Many people think that muscle soreness comes from climbing. Wrong! The real quadriceps killer is the dip.

When you descend steep terrain, your muscles work in the so-called. eccentric mode – they stretch under tension to act as the body’s “brakes” against gravity. This causes thousands of micro-tears in the muscle fibers. The inflammation from these micro-injuries is what you feel as pain 24 to 48 hours later (the so-called DOMS effect).

2. Prevention: How to NOT get to this point?

There is no magic solution, but there are tricks to reduce the pain by up to 50%:

A. Use poles (correctly!)

As we wrote in the previous article, poles are your best friends. They take some of the weight off your back when you go down. Important: Extend your poles by 5-10 cm when descending and lean on them before you step with your feet. This way your arms take the impact, not your hips.

B. Descent technique

Stop rushing down. You might sprain an ankle or sprain a ligament, but not feel the pain right away and keep walking, worsening the injury many times over.

Blood clotting: Aspirin thins the blood. If you fall and get injured on the sharp rocks of Pirin, it will be much more difficult to stop the bleeding.

The right approach: Save the pill just for after the transition and only if the pain is unbearable.

3.
