It often happens in <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Bansko\" href=\"https:\/\/vbansko.com\/en\/for-bansko\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"4576\">Bansko<\/a> It could be 30 degrees and sunny, and at the top it could be hail at a temperature close to zero. Old mountaineers say: <em>\u201cThe mountain doesn\u2019t obey, it lets you in.\u201d<\/em>A hiker&#039;s biggest enemy isn&#039;t fatigue, it&#039;s underestimating the weather. Here&#039;s how to figure out what the sky has in store for you and why your phone&#039;s forecast is probably wrong.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"border: 0; border-top: 1px solid #eee; margin: 30px 0;\" \/>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9; margin-top: 30px;\">1. Why does the usual forecast lie?<\/h2>\n<p>If you are looking at the standard application for <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"the weather\" href=\"https:\/\/vbansko.com\/en\/useful\/weather-in-bansko\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1219\">the weather<\/a> on iPhone or Android and it says \u201cBansko: Sunny, 25\u00b0C\u201d, this applies to the city (900 m above sea level). On Vihren Peak (2914 m) the conditions are radically different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temperature gradient:<\/strong> For every 100 meters of altitude, the temperature drops by about 0.6 to 1 degree. That is, if it is 25\u00b0C in Bansko, it will be about 5-10\u00b0C at the top. Add wind and the feeling becomes minus.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50; margin-top: 25px;\">Which sites should we look at?<\/h3>\n<p>Forget the general sites. For Pirin you need specialized models:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meteoblue:<\/strong> The most accurate model for the Alps and Pirin. Watch \u201cMeteograms\u201d \u2013 they show the development of clouds by hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mountain-forecast.com:<\/strong> Allows you to select a forecast for a specific altitude (e.g. <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"Vihren Peak\" href=\"https:\/\/vbansko.com\/en\/the-devil-has-destroyed-the-marble-throne-of-pirin-and-the-pride-of-bansko\/\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1215\">Vihren Peak<\/a> at 1000m, 2000m and 2914m).<\/li>\n<li><strong>MES (App):<\/strong> The lifeguard app often has an up-to-date summary from the huts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9; margin-top: 40px;\">2. The \u201cSummer Storms\u201d Rule (2:00 PM)<\/h2>\n<p>In the summer (July-August) in Pirin, an iron cycle applies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Morning (07:00 \u2013 11:00):<\/strong> Clear, quiet and sunny.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lunch (12:00 \u2013 13:00):<\/strong> White cumulus clouds (&quot;cotton&quot;) are starting to accumulate around the peaks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Afternoon (2:00 PM \u2013 4:00 PM):<\/strong> The clouds darken and a downpour of thunder and lightning falls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"background-color: #e7f4e4; border-left: 5px solid #4caf50; padding: 20px; margin: 20px 0; border-radius: 4px;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0; font-weight: bold; color: #2e7d32;\">The vBansko Council:<\/p>\n<p>Be an \u201cearly bird.\u201d Start in the cooler hours of 6:00 \u2013 7:00 a.m. The goal is to be down from the summit by 1:00 p.m. or be in the hut drinking tea while it thunders outside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9; margin-top: 40px;\">3. Signs of nature: How to recognize the storm ourselves?<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes the internet is down, but nature gives signals 30-60 minutes in advance:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50; margin-top: 25px;\">A. The Anvil Cloud\u201c<\/h3>\n<p>If you see white fluffy clouds starting to grow rapidly in height and their top flattening like an anvil (becoming flat), run down. This is <em>Cumulonimbus<\/em> \u2013 a storm cloud that brings lightning and hail.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50; margin-top: 25px;\">B. The eerie silence<\/h3>\n<p>Before a storm, the wind often suddenly stops, the birds fall silent, and a strange, heavy silence sets in. This is the \u201ccalm before the storm.\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50; margin-top: 25px;\">C. The standing hair (EXTREME DANGER!)<\/h3>\n<p>If you hear a strange &quot;buzzing&quot; sound from your poles or feel your hair standing up, <strong>You are a target!<\/strong> This is static electricity before a lightning strike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to do right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throw the poles and anything metal away from you.<\/li>\n<li>Get off the ridge immediately (even 10 meters down helps).<\/li>\n<li>Squat on the ground with your legs together (on your backpack or insulation pad). Do not lie down!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2980b9; margin-top: 40px;\">4. Wind: The Factor That Kills<\/h2>\n<p>In Pirin, the wind is more dangerous than the cold.
