For tourists, the resort may be synonymous with skiing and hot <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/vbansko.com\/en\/wine-types-list\/\" title=\"wine\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"3035\">wine<\/a>, but for the keepers of centuries-old traditions, the real winter begins with the purifying power of water and the holiday called here &quot;Voditsi&quot;.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<section>Jordan&#039;s Day (January 6) is not just a date here. It&#039;s the day the heavens open and the men of Bansko prove their strength and faith. Even before sunrise, the air is filled with the scent of incense and beeswax. The church \u2013 a symbol of the Bulgarian revival and the rebellious spirit of the people of Banska Bystrica \u2013 is filled with laypeople of all generations. The solemn Holy Liturgy is just the beginning, a moment of humility before the emotional storm that lies ahead outside.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2c3e50;border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd;padding-bottom: 10px;margin-top: 40px\">The Lithium March and the Road to Water<\/h2>\n<p>After the service, an impressive procession takes shape. At the head are the priests with banners, followed by the officials and the main heroes of the day \u2013 the daredevils who decided to jump for the cross. The procession passes through the cobblestone streets of the old town, drawing hundreds of people behind it.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50;margin-top: 25px\">The Ritual: The Icy Embrace of Voditsi<\/h3>\n<p>The culmination of <strong>Jordan&#039;s Day in Bansko<\/strong> occurs around 11:00 a.m. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, a group of men \u2013 some in folk costumes, others in swimsuits \u2013 warm up on the shore. Here, jumping for the cross is a matter of honor and an act of purification. The locals believe that whoever steps into the water on this day will be as healthy as a \u201ePirin mura\u201c for the entire year.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"background-color: #f9f9f9;border-left: 5px solid #555;margin: 20px 0;padding: 15px;font-style: italic;color: #555\"><p>\u201cThe water literally \u201esprings\u201c from the bodies of the jumpers. Unlike other places, in Bansko there is a spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood, although the fight for the cross is contested.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The lucky person who pulls out the crucifix is carried in their arms, and people kiss the cross and leave gifts for health. Then everyone tries to pour themselves some of the holy water, which is kept in front of the home icon throughout the year.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2c3e50;border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd;padding-bottom: 10px;margin-top: 40px\">Holiday calendar: Voditsi and St. John&#039;s Day<\/h2>\n<p>In Bansko, the holiday does not end with getting out of the water. Jordan&#039;s Day (6th) and Ivanov&#039;s Day (7th) are perceived as one whole \u2013 the &quot;Voditsi&quot; cycle. Young families visit their godparents with gifts - wine, bread and meat, as a sign of respect and continuity.
