If you have a free day and an adventurous spirit, one day trip from Bansko<\/a><\/strong> to the heart of the Rhodope Mountains will transport you to a completely different world. Our destination today is a place steeped in mysticism, legends of Orpheus and an architectural pearl perched on the edge of the cliffs \u2013 Horlog Castle\u201c<\/strong> in the Trigrad Gorge.<\/p>\n

This route is not just a trip from point A to point B. It is a trek through ancient forests, picturesque dams and deep canyons that will recharge your senses and give you the opportunity to taste the most delicious Rhodope specialties. Prepare for about 260 km (total in both directions) of pure beauty.<\/p>\n

The Route: The Road is Part of the Magic<\/h2>\n

To get the most out of your one-day trip from Bansko<\/strong>, we recommend an early start \u2013 around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. The road passes through the picturesque villages of the municipalities of Garmen and Satovcha, where the architecture smoothly changes from the Pirin type to the typical Rhodope stone houses with thatched roofs.<\/p>\n

Stop 1: Dospat Dam \u2013 \u201cThe Sea\u201d of the Rhodope Mountains<\/h3>\n

Don't rush to reach your final destination. As you approach the town of Dospat, you will be greeted by a view that is often compared to the landscapes of Switzerland. The Dospat Dam is the largest in Bulgaria by area and is a must-see for photos. Stop by the panoramic platform before entering the town. The air here is filled with the scent of pine, and the calm of the water is the perfect counterpoint to the adrenaline that awaits you in the gorge.<\/p>\n

Entering the Kingdom of Hades: Trigrad Gorge<\/h2>\n

The most exciting part of the journey begins after the fork in the road near the village of Teshel. The road narrows and you enter the Trigrad Gorge<\/strong>. This is the third longest canyon in Bulgaria, but it is certainly the most impressive. The sheer limestone cliffs rise to a height of up to 350 meters above the road, creating the feeling of a majestic stone tunnel. The sun here illuminates the bottom of the canyon for only a few hours a day.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udca1 Important advice for drivers:<\/strong> In the gorge, the road is single lane in places, although traffic is two-way. Drive slowly, with your headlights on, and be prepared to wait for oncoming traffic in the widened sections.<\/div>\n

The Devil's Throat Cave\u201c<\/h3>\n

It is impossible to take this excursion and not enter the \u201eDevil\u2019s Throat\u201c. This is not your typical cave with beautiful formations. This is a chasm. Here the waters of the Trigrad River fall with a deafening roar into a 42-meter underground waterfall \u2013 the highest in the Balkans.<\/p>\n

The visit involves passing through an artificially dug tunnel and climbing 301 steep steps along the waterfall. The legend is alive: they say that whatever enters the river here never comes to the surface. It was from here that Orpheus descended into the Underworld to save his Eurydice.<\/p>\n

The Climax: Horlog Castle\u201c<\/h2>\n

After climbing the hundreds of steps into the cave, you will need a rest and reinforcement. Just 200 meters from the cave exit, nestled under the overhanging rocks, awaits you Horlog Castle\u201c<\/strong> (Horlog Castle).<\/p>\n

This is the place from your photo and the main goal of our walk today. The building is relatively new, but it was built in the style of a medieval fortress, combining rough stone and massive wood. It fits so naturally into the landscape that it looks as if it has been there for centuries.<\/p>\n

Why \u201cHorlog\u201d?<\/h3>\n

The name comes from the area in which it is located. There are several theories about its origin. One is related to the words \u201chor\u201d (people) and \u201clog\u201d (place), suggesting an ancient gathering place. Another, more mystical theory, connects it to the Sun god (Horus) and ancient pagan cults practiced in the Rhodope Mountains.<\/p>\n
