This isn't just powder skiing; this is ski mountaineering in its purest, rawest, and most ruthless form.

The area of the two highest peaks in Pirin offers some of the most technical, steep and respectful lines not only in Bulgaria, but also in the Balkans. Here, mistakes are unacceptable, and the adrenaline is guaranteed only for those who approach the mountain with great respect and professional preparation.

Terrain specificity: The Marble Shield of Pirin

Unlike the granite parts of Pirin (such as the areas around Todorka, Polezhan or Vasilash), Vihren and Kutelo are marble giants. This geological feature is critical for anyone planning freeride on Vihren and Kutelo.

Marble has a specific behavior in relation to the snowpack. It is smoother and does not “grab” the snow in the way that granite does. This leads to more frequent spontaneous avalanches under certain conditions and requires a much more precise assessment of stability. In addition, when the snow is blown away by the wind, marble remains icy smooth, which makes climbing with crampons a must.

Vihren Peak (2914 m) – The First

The classic descent from Vihren is via the “Kabata” saddle to the hut of the same name.
