Often called the “Alpine Jewel” of the region above Bansko, this tour takes you directly into the high mountain zone – a world of rugged peaks, crystal air and emerald glacial eyes staring into the sky. This is not just a walk, but an immersion in one of the most fragile ecosystems in the Balkans. Here, above 2000 meters above sea level, nature recovers extremely difficultly, and human impact can be devastating. In this guide, we will look at how to complete this magnificent circular route, enjoying the views, but also leaving the mountain clean behind.

ℹ️ Quick overview of the Circular Route

📍 Start and End: Vihren Hut (1950 m above sea level)

⏱️ Duration: 4-5 hours (total for the entire circuit, with breaks)

🟡 Difficulty: Medium (has steep rocky sections, requires good shoes)

💎 Main stops: Lake Okoto, Fish Lake, Muratovo Lake.

Route description: Step by step

The circular Banderishki Lakes route is ideal for a one-day hike as it allows you to see as much as possible without returning the same way. Here is how the classic tour goes:

Stage 1: Vihren Hut – Lake “Okoto”

From the hut, follow the red markings (direction shelter) Tevno Lake). The trail begins with a steep climb up stone “steps”. After about 30-40 minutes you will reach the fork for “Okoto” (Ravna Lake). It is small, but extremely deep and with a perfect round shape, hence its name. It is located at 2026 m above sea level.

Stage 2: “The Eye” – Fish Lake

You return to the main trail and continue up through the valley. After about another 40 minutes of walking along the river, you will reach Ribnoto Banderishko Lake (2190 m above sea level). This is the largest lake in the group and a popular place for a longer break. Here is also the important fork – to make a circular route, you need to follow the trail that turns right (west), crosses the stream and heads towards Muratov Vrh.

Stage 3: Ribnoto Lake – Muratovo Lake – Vihren Hut

This is the most picturesque part. The trail cuts through the slopes with incredible panoramas of Vihren and Todorka. Soon, Muratovoto Lake (2230 m above sea level) will open before you, in whose waters the peak of the same name dramatically looks out. From here, the descent back to the Vihren hut begins along the blue/yellow markings, passing through squats and moraines, to close the circle in about an hour and a half.

⚠️ Warning: Eco issue of paramount importance!

We are in a high mountain area where the balance is extremely delicate. Unfortunately, on social media we often see people swimming in these glacial lakes, looking for coolness or a spectacular photo. You should know that this is not only prohibited by law, but also extremely harmful to nature.

🚫 Why is swimming in lakes prohibited?

Glacial lakes are closed or slow-flowing systems with very low temperatures. They are home to rare species that cannot survive pollution.

Chemical attack: When you enter the water, sunscreen, body lotions, deodorants, and natural oils from your skin dissolve into the lake.

Ecosystem destruction: These chemicals form a film on the water, changing its composition and literally suffocating the microorganisms and specific flora that have lived there for millennia.

Be true ecotourists – enjoy these jewels with your eyes and lenses, not your body!

Practical tips for the route

Equipment: High hiking boots are a must. The terrain is rocky, with many moraines and roots of squat trees.

Weather: In the high mountain the weather changes in minutes. Bring a raincoat and warm outerwear, even if the forecast is for sunshine.

Water: Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person.
