For us, the residents of Bansko, he is the pulse of the city, a symbol of the rebellious Pirin spirit and of a faith that remains unbroken even in the face of execution. He was born in the heart of Pirin, into a family that was part of the elite of Bansko.

His father, Yonko Vaptsarov (Prodanichin), is a fearsome voivode of the VMRO, a loyal companion of Yane Sandanski and a participant in the liberation struggles. Yonko is a man of action, of arms and of politics – even Tsar Ferdinand and Tsar Boris III have visited their home.

His mother, Elena Vezyova, brings a completely different energy. A graduate of the American College in Samokov and a teacher, she introduces her son to the world of literature, music, and Christian virtues. From her, Nikola inherits his extraordinary compassion and sensitivity to the pain of others.

Dreams of literature and the clash with reality

After graduating from junior high school in Bansko (1924) and studying at the Razlog High School, young Nikola dreamed of studying literature. His soul sought poetry, but his father's will was iron. Yonko decided that his son should have a "manly profession" and sent him to The Naval Engineering School in Varna (1926–1932).

Although not his choice, the sea and machines left a lasting impression on his work. During his internship on the ship "Burgas", Vaptsarov visited Constantinople, Famagusta, Alexandria, Beirut and Port Said. These trips gave birth to the cycle "Impressions" and gave him a glimpse of the world beyond the high peaks of Pirin.

The years in "Kocherinovo": The Fire Intelligence

After graduating, Vaptsarov faced harsh reality head-on. In 1932, he began working at the Balabanov Brothers' Book and Paperback Factory in the village of Kocherinovo. Initially, he was a stoker, and later a mechanic.

This is a difficult period, but also a time of personal growth:

He organized amateur theater and played roles.

He meets the love of his life – Boyka Dimitrova, with whom they start a family.

They experienced a huge tragedy - the death of their firstborn son, Yoncho, who died at only 7 months old.

He was fired in 1936 after a serious accident at the factory and subsequent layoffs. The family moved to Sofia, where misery and unemployment became their constant companions. Vaptsarov worked as a technician, a stoker on the railways, and even in the Ekarisazh – the lowest level, where animal carcasses were burned. It was this pain and the smell of burning that gave birth to the ingenious verses of „Motor Songs“.

„"Motor Songs" and the struggle

In 1940, with a circulation of 1,500 copies, his only collection of poems was published - „"Motor Songs"“. He became head of the Central Military Commission of the Bulgarian Communist Party, was involved in mining and sabotage and logistics. On March 4, 1942, he was arrested after a large-scale police operation.

The 585/42 trial and immortality

After months of torture at the Police Directorate, on July 23, 1942, the death sentence was read to Nikola Vaptsarov and five of his comrades – Anton Ivanov, Anton Popov, Petar Bogdanov, Georgi Minchev and Atanas Romanov.

Vaptsarov refused a request for clemency. In his last hours, awaiting execution, he wrote two of the most powerful poems in world literature – „"Farewell"“ (to his wife) and „"Pre-mortem"“ (to the people).

The last words

There is no stronger testimony to the poet's spirit than the verses written literally before the shooting:

„"A shooting, and after the shooting – worms.".
It's so simple and logical.
But in the storm we will be with you again,
"My people, because we have loved you!"“

At the Garrison Shooting Range in Sofia, he and his comrades greet the bullets with Botev's song: „"He who falls in the fight for freedom does not die!"“.

Heritage in Bansko: Nikola Vaptsarov House Museum„

Today, if you visit Bansko, you cannot miss the central square, where the poet's birthplace stands.
