(Logistics)

By car

Since the hike is linear (starts at one point and ends at another), the logistics require advance planning. The start is on the asphalt road from Bansko in the direction of Vihren hut. About 3 km above the town there is a marked turnoff to the left for Demyanitsa hut, where you can leave your car (free parking by the road). The finish is in the area Popina the bow above the town of Sandanski. You will need a second car, taxi or pre-arranged transportation to take you back.

On foot

The actual hiking start begins at the turnoff above Bansko. You start along a wide forest path, marked with permanent signs. blue marking 🔵, which follows the course of the Demyanitsa River up into the mountains.

🥾 Description of the route

The transition can be divided into three main stages, each with its own specific character:

Stage 1: Bansko – Demyanitsa Chalet„

The easiest and coolest stage. The trail runs through centuries-old coniferous forests (white pine and spruce) along the Demyanitsa River. The climb is long, but relatively smooth. This section takes about 4 hours and ends at the Demyanitsa hut (1895 m above sea level), which is an excellent point for the first big break and recharging with water.

Stage 2: Demyanitsa hut – Begovitsa hut (Kamenitsa)

This is the alpine heart of the route and the biggest challenge. The forest quickly gives way to slough and stone moraines. A steep climb begins along the picturesque Preval Lakes towards Cerebral gate (2600 m.a.s.l.) – the highest point of the trek. From there, magnificent views of the peaks of Kamenitsa and Malka Kamenitsa open up. Next is a transfer to the Begovishta Gate and an endless descent to the valley of the Begovitsa River. After about 5-6 hours of difficult terrain, the Begovitsa hut (1750 m.a.s.l.) is reached.

Stage 3: Begovitsa hut – Yane Sandanski hut„

The last stage takes about 1.5 – 2 hours. It is a pleasant descent along a wide path and a dirt road through deciduous and mixed forests. You can feel the warm air of the south. The route ends in front of the „Yane Sandanski“ hut (1230 m above sea level) and the nearby Popinolak waterfall.

🛖 Basic information about the sites (Huts)

Due to the length of the route, tourists often choose to stay overnight in one of the huts to divide the hike into two days.

💡 Tip: If you are not in top sports shape, be sure to plan an overnight stay at Demyanitsa or Begovitsa huts.

✔️ Working hours: All three huts (Demyanitsa, Begovitsa, Yane Sandanski) are open year-round, but in winter the conditions are harsh.

📅 Most visited in: July – September.

🛏️ Places/Beds: Each of the chalets offers over 50 beds, shared and private rooms (with prior reservation).

💸 Price: About 25-35 BGN per night (depending on the hut and room type).

🐕 Dogs: Yes (most lodges allow dogs, but you must ask in advance).

📞 Phone: Demyanitsa hut (0878 688 288); Begovitsa hut (0898 443 350). *Phone numbers are subject to change.

⚠️ Important to know

Weather: The alpine section around the Mozgovishta and Begovishta gates is extremely windy and exposed.
