(Logistics)

To this route no car access. Both of its endpoints are located high in the mountains.
Until the start of Wine Gate (2600 m) You can reach it on foot, moving along the Main Pirin Ridge (red marking) – most often coming from the "Vihren" hut (about 4-5 hours) or from the "Tevno Ezero" shelter (about 1 hour).
To Mozgovitsa area It is most often reached from the Begovitsa hut (Kamenitsa) or from the Spano Pole shelter (along the brown markings).

🥾 Description of the route

1. Start from Wine Gate
The route starts from the saddle itself, where it separates from the main red marking. At the beginning, the trail goes steeply down the southern slope, entering the spacious cirque. The terrain is typically high mountain - mostly stones, scree and short grass.

2. Descent along Mozgovishki Ridge
Following the green markings, the trail gradually loses altitude, cutting through the slopes. On the left rise the massifs of Mozgovishki Ridge. The descent is relatively monotonous, but opens up wonderful panoramas to the south towards the lower parts of the mountain and the valley of the Sandanska Bistrica River.

3. Reaching the Mozgovitsa area
After about an hour and a half to two hours of descent, the terrain becomes more gently sloping and green. You reach the Mozgovitsa area, where the green marking intersects with the brown one (coming from the Sinanitsa hut and the Spano Pole shelter and going to the Begovitsa hut). Here, route No. 10 officially ends, and you have to choose where to continue your hike.

🛖 Basic information about the area

Since there are no huts along the route itself, it is important to plan your overnight stay well in one of the neighboring sites.

📌 Tip: If you are making the trek in the opposite direction (climbing from Mozgovitsa to Vinarska Porta), plan on more time and water, as the elevation gain is serious and tiring.

☀️ Season: Recommended only in summer (July - September).

🛏️ Nearest bases: "Tevno Lake" shelter (about 1-1.5 hours from Vinarska Porta) and "Begovitsa" hut (about 2 hours from Mozgovitsa).

☎️ Scope: In this area, mobile coverage is very weak or completely absent.

⚠️ Important to know

The area is extremely wild and remote from civilization. Stock up on water in advance – there are no reliable water sources on the high ridge and at the top of the descent.

Winter conditions: The route not suitable for crossing in winter, as the slopes below Vinarska and Mozgoviška Porta are highly avalanche-prone.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why should I choose this route?
It is ideal if you are doing a multi-day hike in Pirin and want to transfer from the northern part (Vihren hut / Tevno Lake) to the southern part (Begovitsa hut / Sandanski), avoiding the long detour along the ridge.

Is the green marking well maintained?
In the higher part, the markings are mostly strip markings on the stones and posts.
