With their powerful stems and snow-laden crowns, they are the silent guardians of the mountain, withstanding harsh blizzards and sub-zero temperatures century after century. For every guest of Bansko<\/a>, a walk through the snowy coniferous forests is a must-see experience. But to truly appreciate the magic of this sight, you need to know the characters in it. In this article, we will take you on a virtual walk through the snowy paths of Pirin to reveal the secrets of these amazing trees.<\/p>\n

The emblem of the mountain: White and Black Fir<\/h2>\n

Pirin is world-famous for its centuries-old coniferous forests, with a large part of the National Park occupied by mulberry trees. They are not just beautiful trees \u2013 they are Balkan endemics (species found only on the Balkan Peninsula) and true masters of survival in extreme conditions.<\/p>\n

White pine (Pinus peuce) \u2013 The aristocrat of the heights<\/h3>\n

The white pine prefers the high parts of the mountains, often reaching the very tree line (about 2000-2200 meters above sea level). In winter, its silhouette is extremely elegant. Its crown is relatively narrow and pyramidal, which helps it easily \u201cshake off\u201d heavy snow, protecting its branches from breaking.<\/p>\n

Its bark is smooth and gray-greenish on young trees, and cracks into small plates on older trees. The needles are gathered in bundles of five \u2013 fine and delicate, they hold snowflakes like lace.<\/p>\n

Black pine (Pinus heldreichii) \u2013 The Lord of the Rocks<\/h3>\n

Unlike its \u201cwhite\u201d sister, the black pine (also known as the Bosnian pine) is rugged, knotty, and loves steep, rocky terrain where few other plants can take root. Its roots literally split the marble of Pirin to find support.<\/p>\n

You will recognize it by its ash-gray to black bark, which in old specimens resembles armor, composed of characteristic polygonal plates (the so-called \u201carmor-like bark\u201d). Its needles are dark green, hard, prickly and gathered in bundles of two.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udca1 How to distinguish them in winter:<\/strong> The easiest way is to look at the needles (if you have access to a low branch) - in the white pine there are 5 in a bundle, and in the black - 2. If the branches are high, look at the bark: the black pine has deeply cracked "armor"-type bark, while the white pine is smoother.<\/div>\n

We can't talk about Muri in Pirin<\/strong>, not to mention its greatest representative \u2013 the Baykusheva fir. This amazing specimen of the black fir species is over 1300 years old, making it the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria and one of the oldest in the entire world.<\/p>\n
