When the August sun has finally melted even the most stubborn snowdrifts on the steep northern slopes, Pirin Mountain reveals its most raw, majestic and challenging appearance – its marble and granite alpine edges.

This article serves as your main portal and overview guide for the most iconic rock edges above Bansko. The uplift of the mountain and the glacial activity in the past have shaped sharp peaks, deep cirques and sheer walls. Traversing the ridges that connect these peaks is the closest feeling to real mountaineering that the average tourist can experience.

Here is a brief overview of the big three that attract adrenaline seekers based in Bansko and the region:

1. Vihren Peak and its approaches

Vihren (2914 m) is the peak of the mountain and the starting point to the marble ridge. While the route through Kabata is massive and relatively easy, the crossing of the ridges on the north side (Dzhamdzhiev ridge or the approach from Premkata) requires much more experience and offers a real alpine thrill.

If you want to learn exactly how to prepare for climbing the peak, what are the safest trails, where are the hidden dangers and how to plan the weather From Bansko to Vihren hut, read our full guide:

⛰️ To the full article: All about climbing Vihren

2. The Horse – The Symbol of High Mountain Adrenaline

This is undoubtedly the most popular cliff edge in Bulgaria. Located at an altitude of over 2800 meters between the peaks of Kutelo and Banski Suhodol, Koncheto offers a feeling of flying. On one side is a 300-meter abyss, and on the other - an 800-meter sheer drop. Its width in places is only 50 centimeters.

Although secured with a metal rope, the route requires a serious approach.
