It is not just another panoramic view, but the living, pulsating energy of the mountain - the encounter with a herd free horses in Pirin. These graceful animals, galloping across the vast alpine pastures, have become a true symbol of freedom and harmony in nature. One of the most emblematic places where you can observe them in their natural environment is the picturesque Spano Field. Located at the crossroads of several popular tourist routes, accessible from Bansko, this place offers landscapes that many compare to the Swiss Alps.

Who are these horses really?

Many tourists call them “wild”, but the truth is that these are semi-wild herds. The horses have owners – mostly local people from Bansko, Razlog, Kresna and Sandanski. Every spring, when the snow melts and the mountains turn green, their owners take them high into the alpine zone. There the animals remain completely free throughout the summer, right up until the first autumn snows.

A large number of them are representatives of the local Karakachan breed or its crosses. They are small in stature, but extremely healthy, resistant to harsh mountain conditions and with a very strong immunity. Their calm disposition and adaptability make them the perfect inhabitants of the harsh Pirin relief.

Spano Pole – The summer home of the Pirin herds

If you are looking for a guaranteed encounter with these beautiful creatures, Spano Pole is your destination. It is a huge, relatively flat cirque, located at an altitude of about 2050 meters. The area is dotted with characteristic moraines (large granite boulders), which from a distance resemble a flock of crouching sheep or small tents.

In July and August, these vast green areas are covered with blooming mountain herbs and crystal clear streams. It is this abundance of water and fresh grass that attracts herds of free-ranging horses. It is not uncommon to see over 20-30 horses, including small foals, grazing peacefully or resting under the warm rays of the August sun.

How to get there from Bansko?

The most popular approach to Spano Pole from Bansko is via Vihren hut. The route is extremely panoramic, but requires good physical fitness:

Starting point: Vihren Hut (reachable by car or bus from Bansko).

Route: You take the trail to Sinanitsa hut and Spano Pole shelter (blue and yellow markings). You pass by the beautiful Muratovo Lake.

The challenge: The climb to the Banderishta Gate (2500 m). This is the steepest section.

The prize: After the gate, a view opens up of the entire circus of Spano Pole and a gentle descent begins to the horse pastures. The entire hike takes about 3.5 – 4.5 hours one way.

Rules of conduct when meeting with free horses

Although they are accustomed to human presence, these animals live by the laws of the wild. To make your experience safe and enjoyable for both you and them, please follow these important rules:

Attention – Strict safety rules:

Don't feed them! Human food, bread, and sweets can cause severe colic and death in horses. Lead stallions or mothers with young will defend the herd aggressively and may trample the dog.

Don't stand behind them: Never pass closely behind a horse, as they may instinctively kick at a sudden noise.

Tips for photographers and nature lovers:
The horses are extremely photogenic against the backdrop of the Sinanitsa or Bashliyski Chukar peaks. If a horse approaches, just stand still.

The ecological role of horses in Pirin

The presence of these semi-wild herds is of great importance for the ecological balance in Pirin National Park. This creates a favorable environment for the development of a number of rare mountain flowers and herbs, preserving the biodiversity of the region.

Meeting the free horses of Spano Pole is one of the most authentic experiences that summer Pirin can offer you.
