But if you look more closely at the transparent, icy waters near the shore, you will notice a shadow darting at lightning speed. This is the beautiful mountain trout in Pirin – the undisputed ruler of the high mountain reservoirs.

Observing these graceful fish in their natural habitat is one of the most thrilling experiences for wildlife lovers. In this article, we will tell you all about this amazing species, where you can catch a glimpse of it, and why its conservation is of critical importance to the fragile ecosystem of Pirin National Park.

Balkan Trout: The Jewel of Mountain Waters

What most tourists commonly call “mountain trout” is actually the iconic Balkan trout (Brown trout). It is a true masterpiece of evolution, perfectly adapted to life in extreme conditions. The water in the Pirin lakes rarely exceeds 10-12 degrees even in the heat of August, but for the trout these icy, oxygen-rich waters are the ideal home.

Visually, the Balkan trout is easily recognizable. Its back is usually dark green to brownish - perfect camouflage against the background of granite stones and silt. On the sides, its body is covered with characteristic red and black spots, often surrounded by a light halo. Depending on the specific lake and its food base, the color of the fish can vary, making each population unique.

WARNING: Absolute ban on fishing!
Pirin National Park is a protected area with a strict regime. Fishing in all glacial lakes and upper reaches of rivers within the park is absolutely prohibited at any time of the year! This ban is not accidental. It is located a little higher up in the Banderishki Circus and is deeper, but small fish often gather in the shallow coves in its southern part.

Lake Okoto: The lowest lake in the Vihren hut area. It is very small and extremely clear, making it perfect for observation, as long as you maintain absolute silence on the shore.

Popovo Lake: The largest and deepest lake in Pirin, accessible from Dobrinishte and Bezbog hut. Its presence is a clear bioindicator of the exceptional purity of the water. The trout cannot survive in polluted or oxygen-poor waters. It feeds mainly on aquatic insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and sometimes flying insects that have had the imprudence to land on the water surface.

An interesting fact is that in some of the highest lakes, fish were artificially stocked in the past, while in others they have been natural inhabitants for millennia. Regardless of their origin, today they are an integral part of the biodiversity of Pirin.

Expert tips for successful monitoring:

Polarized sunglasses: This is your most important accessory!
