Balkan Trout: The Jewel of Mountain Waters<\/h2>\n

What most tourists commonly call \u201cmountain trout\u201d is actually the iconic Balkan trout (Brown trout<\/em>). It is a true masterpiece of evolution, perfectly adapted to life in extreme conditions. The water in the Pirin lakes rarely exceeds 10-12 degrees even in the heat of August, but for the trout these icy, oxygen-rich waters are the ideal home.<\/p>\n

Visually, the Balkan trout is easily recognizable. Its back is usually dark green to brownish - perfect camouflage against the background of granite stones and silt. On the sides, its body is covered with characteristic red and black spots, often surrounded by a light halo. High-altitude lakes are closed and extremely sensitive ecosystems. Even minimal fishing pressure can lead to the complete destruction of the population in a given reservoir.
