However, few people imagine that high in the granite embrace of Pirin, far above the forest belt, life is teeming, so unexpected for these harsh conditions. We are talking about one of the most resilient and interesting inhabitants of the park - the unique mountain frog in Pirin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Meet the Pirin survivor: The Mountain Frog<\/h2>\n

In Pirin, at altitudes above 2000 meters above sea level, there are mainly two species of amphibians, which we unofficially call \u201cmountain frogs\u201d. Most often these are the Mountain Water Frog (Frog<\/em>) and the Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina variegata<\/em>Both species are true masters of survival.<\/p>\n

These frogs have evolved to withstand extreme temperatures, thin air, and intense ultraviolet radiation. They are smaller than their lowland relatives, and their coloration is often camouflaged\u2014brownish, gray, or olive green\u2014allowing them to blend in perfectly with granite boulders and mountain mud.<\/p>\n

The main question that tourists ask themselves is: "What are frogs doing high in the mountains, where there is snow almost all year round?" The answer lies in their need for water to reproduce. Mountain frogs take advantage of the short alpine window of time when the snow melts.<\/p>\n

Critically important for them are the so-called "temporary water bodies" - small puddles formed by melting snow, sinkholes, swamps and shallow bays around large glacial lakes. These puddles are quickly warmed by the strong mountain sun, which is necessary for the rapid development of tadpoles.<\/p>\n

\n Despite their small size, frogs in the high mountains play a key role. They are the main regulator of the population of insects (mosquitoes, flies and larvae) that breed in the wetlands. At the same time, they are an important source of food for a number of mountain birds and mammals.
