The image of the chausha is unique to the region and is radically different from the masks in other parts of Bulgaria. The traditional costume is made of top-quality goat skins with extremely long and well-groomed hair (often reaching over 60-70 cm). The preparation of such a costume takes years of caring for the animals and thousands of leva of investment, which turns the costumes into priceless family heirlooms, passed down from father to son.<\/p>\n<p>On his head the chausha wears <em>photo<\/em> \u2013 a tall conical mask that ends with a ponytail. The face is hidden to preserve the mystique of the ritual. Around the waist of each participant are girded heavy copper and bronze bells (chans and clappers), the total weight of which can exceed 40 kilograms! The dance of the Chaushes is specific \u2013 they step heavily, with rhythmic jumps, to create that powerful, resonating sound that is believed to drive away evil spirits (karakonjuli) and bring the city health, fertility and prosperity in the new year.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #2c3e50;\">How is the holiday going?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Kukeri Carnival Starchevata<\/strong> is the culmination of months of feverish preparation in each of the seven neighborhoods (quarters) of Razlog: Krainata, Srbovo, Dolnata, Istok, Varosha, Novo Selo and Goleshovo. The competition between the neighborhoods is proverbial \u2013 each of them strives to bring out the largest group, the most beautiful chaushas, the most magnificent maiden costumes and the most attractive smeshniki (masked characters who act out folk scenes).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #2c3e50;\">The procession and the big dance<\/h3>\n<p>Already in the early hours of January 1st, the groups gather in their neighborhoods and begin ritual tours of the houses. Around 10:30 \u2013 11:00 in the morning, the big parade towards the central square of Razlog begins. Each neighborhood has a precisely set time for the performance.
