Choosing a Personal Doctor (GP) in Bansko<\/h2>\n<p>The heart of the Bulgarian healthcare system is <strong>The general practitioner (GP)<\/strong>, known as a \u201cPersonal Doctor\u201d. He is your first point of contact for any health problem. For pensioners the fee is 1.00 leva, and children are completely exempt from it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Directions for specialists:<\/strong> If you need a cardiologist, orthopedist or other specialist, your GP will issue you a \u201cReferral\u201d. With this document, the specialist\u2019s examination is covered by the NHIF (again, you only pay the user fee).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laboratory tests:<\/strong> Blood tests, X-rays and CT scans are covered if prescribed by a referral. A small fee is paid for \u201ctaking biological material\u201d at the laboratory (about 2-4 BGN).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hospital treatment:<\/strong> Surgeries and stays in state and municipal hospitals are covered (a small daily bed fee is charged).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subsidized medicines:<\/strong> If you suffer from chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension), the NHIF fully or partially covers the cost of your medications through an electronic prescription.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>5. Hospitals and Emergency Care in the region<\/h2>\n<p>There is a Medical Center (polyclinic) in Bansko itself, where general practitioners and some specialists are located. However, Bansko does not have its own hospital for active treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The main general hospital for the entire region is located 6 kilometers away. It has an Emergency Room, a surgery and a maternity ward.
