Jordan's Day in Bansko: The Tradition of Epiphany

On January 6, when the air in Bansko is at its clearest and Pirin is covered in deep snow, the town celebrates one of the biggest Christian holidays – Jordan's Day (Epiphany). This is the day when, according to legend, "the sky opens" and the water acquires purifying power.

За разлика от комерсиалните събития, Йордановден в Bansko е празник на духа и общността. Ако сте в града по това време, не пропускайте да станете част от тържественото шествие и емоционалния ритуал по “спасяването на кръста”.

How is the holiday going?

The holiday in Bansko follows an ancient canon, starting early in the morning and ending with folk revelry. Here's what to expect:

  • 🕯️ Solemn Holy Liturgy (07:30 – 09:30)
The Great Blessing of Water is celebrated in the emblematic Holy Trinity Church. The bell ringing echoes throughout the city, announcing the Baptism of the Lord. Even if you are not a strong believer, the atmosphere in the temple with its unique frescoes and choir singing is impressive.
  • 🚶 Lithium procession (around 10:00 a.m.)
After the service, the priests, carrying banners and icons, lead a procession from the temple to the place of the ritual (traditionally to the "Fishery" reservoir or the bridge over the river).
  • ❄️ Cross Throwing (around 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.)
The culmination of the holiday. The priest throws the cross into the icy waters. Dozens of young men from Bansko and the region jump into the water. According to legend, the one who pulls out the cross will be healthy and happy throughout the year.

Did you know that?

It is believed that on St. Jordan's Day the water becomes "holy" and cannot make anyone sick. If the cross freezes in the water, the year will be exceptionally fertile and healthy. After the cross is removed, the priest sprinkles water on everyone present for health.

Tips for visitors

If you plan to observe the ritual, here are some practical tips:

  • Dress warmly: January in Bansko is harsh, and the ritual is outdoors by the water.
  • Come early: Hundreds of people gather around the cross-throwing site. For good visibility, be there 20 minutes before the procession.
  • St. John's Day (January 7): The celebrations don't stop. The next day is St. John's Day – another big holiday, which is celebrated abundantly in the taverns of Bansko.

Jordan's Day is the perfect occasion to feel the true spirit of Bansko - a combination of faith, raw nature and living traditions.
