Babinden in Bansko 2026: The unique holiday with the strainers on January 21

21 January @ 10:30 - 14:00
Young women in costumes with babies in cots dance a horo on Babinden in Bansko.

While Bulgaria celebrates on the 8th, in the heart of Pirin the real celebration comes on January 21st! Come see the most colorful and cheerful holiday in the winter calendar of BanskoOld-style baby shower.

This is not just a day of maternity care, but a triumph of life, continuity, and respect for young mothers and older women. There is no staged theater here - there is living tradition, handed down costumes, and authentic rituals.

✨ What you will see (Highlights):

  • 👶 Babies in "strainers": A unique sight for Bansko! Young mothers ("brides") carry their babies on their backs in hand-woven, colorful woolen towels (sifters), dressed in ancient costumes.

  • 👵 The "Watering the Grandmother" ritual: Traditional washing of the midwife's/grandmother's hands under a fruit tree with soap and gifts to ensure easy birth of children.

  • 🎶 Grandma's dance: The grand finale in the square. Led by the grandmother, adorned with dried peppers and wool, followed by the mothers with babies on their backs. All this – to the sounds of zurnas and drums.

  • 📸 Photographer's paradise: The contrast between the colorful costumes and the white Pirin snow creates some of the most beautiful shots you can capture in Bulgaria.

ℹ️ Useful information for guests:

  1. Location: Be at the central Nikola Vaptsarov Square around noon for the big dance.

  2. Photos: The holiday is extremely photogenic, but please ask permission before taking close-up photos of babies' faces.

  3. Food: After the dance, the celebration continues in the local taverns – a perfect time to try Bansko specialties.

“The emotion of seeing the city's youngest residents become part of a centuries-old custom even before they can walk is unforgettable.”
