📜 The secret of the name: Why “Banderitsa”?
The name of the meadow (as well as the river that flows through it) is shrouded in mystery. There are two main theories that intertwine in the history of the region:
- 🏴 Theory 1: The Flag (Bandera)
The most popular version connects the name with the word “"Bandera"” (from Italian/Latin flag), which means flag. It is believed that during the Ottoman rule, this meadow was a strategic rallying point. Here, the outlaws or local defenders would plant their flag to rally their troops before going into battle. - 👑 Theory 2: Ruler Bander
Another legend tells of a brave local boyar or voivode named Bander, who ruled these lands. He fiercely defended the valley from invaders and in his honor the river and the area bear his name, as a symbol of the rebellious Pirin spirit.
Today, instead of battle flags, the flags of the Ski World Cup fly here, but the name keeps the history alive.
