Pirin: The Alpine Belt and the Most Popular Huts
Pirin is the backbone of tourism in the region. Here the infrastructure is the most developed, but the workload is also the greatest. Here's what you need to know about the main sites:
1. “Banderitsa” Hut” – The first camp
It is located 14 km from the city and is accessible by car in the summer. It has about 100 seats and is ideal for large groups. It is important to know that in the winter the road to it is closed to cars and access is only on foot.
2. Vihren Chalet“ – In the heart of the mountain
Located just above “Banderitsa”, this is the most popular starting point for Vihren Peak and Koncheto.
3. Hut “Gotse Delchev” и “Godless”
They are located above Dobrinishte (6 km from Bansko). This area offers the easiest access to the high mountain:
- Gotse Delchev Hut: Accessible via an excellent asphalt road, it has parking.
- Bezbog Hut: It is reached by chairlift. From here, even beginner tourists can see Popovo Lake without any difficult hikes.
4. “Yavorov” Chalet”
A favorite of experienced mountaineers, the Yavorov hut is the base for the harshest, karst part of Pirin. The hut is modern, expanded and offers excellent conditions. Access is via the turnoff for Betolovo near Razlog.
South Rila and the Rhodope Mountains: Hidden Treasures
If you want to escape the crowds on the Pirin trails, head to the huts around Bansko in the direction of Rila and the Rhodope Mountains.
5. “Macedonia” Chalet” (South Rila)
Located in the Mechi Prohod saddle, it is one of the highest in the Balkans. Access is easiest through the Semkovo resort (above Belitsa). The winter route from here is considered the safest from avalanches.
6. “Hristo Smirnenski” Chalet” (Yundola)
Located in the Yundola region, it is an example of modern management. It has a sauna and offers excellent conditions for families who want a lighter mountain tourism.
7. The Rhodope Connection: Avramovo Train Station
Although not a hut, the highest railway station in the Balkans (1267 m) is a must-see. The narrow-gauge railway journey from Bansko to Avramovo is a unique experience connecting the three mountains.
