The city and the surrounding area in April
Peace, greenery and great offers after the end of the ski season.
Temperatures — Spring is coming
In April, temperatures in the city range from 3°C in the morning to 15°C in the afternoon. The sun is already pleasantly warm, but the weather remains changeable. Spring rains are not uncommon, which makes the city extremely green and fresh.
Prices — Offseason Drop
After the ski season ends, April is month of significant discounts. The hotels and guesthouses are seriously lowering their prices. This is a great time for a budget vacation or a luxurious spa weekend at a much more affordable price.
Ideal for SPA
Changeable spring weather makes April perfect for SPA tourism. Take a dip in a warm mineral pool in village of Banya or Dobrinishte, while feeling the cool air and looking at the snowy peaks of Pirin, is an indescribable pleasure.
What should I wear?
Layering is key. Spring jacket, sweater and comfortable shoes for walks around the city. Don't forget a raincoat or umbrella for sudden spring showers.
What to do
- Walk around the old part of Bansko (Varosha) — the cobblestone streets are quiet, and the air smells of spring.
- Give yourself full attention relax in SPA center or the mineral baths in the region.
- Enjoy traditional dinner at a local restaurant tavern — without the madness of the winter season, the service is even more personal.
- Organize a day trip to Rila Monastery or Melnik — the weather is great for cultural tourism outside the high mountains.
The mountain in April
The transition from snow to greenery — a time of mud, melting snow, and closed huts.
Avalanche danger
April is the month of active snowmelt. Rising temperatures make the snow cover in the highlands (above 2000 m) extremely unstable. The avalanche danger is real and high. — avoid steep slopes and gullies.
End of ski season
Depending on the year, the ski area closes in early or mid-April. Even if the lifts are working, the snow becomes "heavy" and slushy in the afternoon. Check the official website of the concessionaire for exact closing dates.
The huts are resting
After the end of the winter season, most chalets in the highlands are closing for maintenance. Do not rely on shelter or food without calling first. The routes above 1800 m are still in winter conditions.
Lower trails — Muddy but fresh
The trails in the lower parts of the mountain (up to 1400 m) are starting to clear of snow, but are often muddy and wet from the melting waters. The waterfalls are extremely full and impressive during this period.
Reasonable routes
- Walk along the asphalt road to Banderishka meadow (if the barrier is open) or on the lower flat paths.
- Visit to the waterfalls in the lower part, which are now the most lush and beautiful.
- Wear high, waterproof hiking boots — you will wade through mud and puddles of melting snow.
What NOT to do
- Do not undertake Trekking to the peaks (Vihren, Todorka) without serious winter experience and up-to-date information about the avalanche situation.
- Do not walk on paths with regular sneakers — the snow is "rotten", it sinks deep, and icy streams flow underneath.
- Don't count on the gondola working — check the status of the lifts, before planning a hike up.
