End of summer peak: August is the last hot month — everything is open, the routes are at full capacity, but from the middle of the month the days get noticeably shorter. On the peaks of Pirin, the evenings already feel the autumn chill. Bansko is still lively, but the crowd starts to thin out after the 15th.

It is August. almost as warm as July — maximums around 25–27°C in the city. Nights are pleasantly cool — 13–14°C. From the middle of the month, the mornings already carry a light autumn scent. Afternoon storms continue, but are slightly less frequent than in July.

💰 Prices — Peak to midpoint, then decline

The first half of August is still peak season with high prices. After the 15th, demand drops and hotels start offering better deals. Great time for last-minute deals at the end of the month — the quality is the same, the prices are lower.

From the end of August The forest around Bansko is starting to change color — the first yellow and orange hues appear on the beech forest edges. The mountain grass in the meadows begins to turn yellow. The days shorten by about 1 hour compared to June — sunsets become early.

Afternoon storms continue into August, though slightly rarer than July. The rule remains the same: leave early, get out of open areas before 1 p.m. In late August, storms can bring hail and colder rain — wear a warmer raincoat.

All routes are passable, but after August 15th the crowd decreases significantly. Vihren, The horse and Popovo Lake feel calmer. An ideal moment for people looking for a full mountain experience without the July clutter on the trails.

🍂 Autumn shades on the peaks

From the end of August the forest zone above 1800 m begins to show the first yellow spots. The mountain grasses in the meadows are turning yellow, and the blueberries and junipers are already ripe. Evenings at the hut require warm layer — temperatures drop to 5–8°C after sunset.

August offers a unique contrast between the last summer foliage and the first autumn colors — especially beautiful at the end of the month. The forests around Banderishka meadow and Demyanitsa are stunning in this transitional light. The early morning brings a soft mist over the valleys.

  • Climbing the Vihren Peak (2914 m) — fewer tourists on the trail at the end of August. Leave at 6:30 a.m. from Vihren Hut for a peaceful morning at the summit.
  • Transition Bezbog Hut — Popovoto Lake — the lake at the end of August is completely silent, the reflection of the peaks is crystal clear. An accessible and extremely beautiful route.
  • Route Banderishka meadow — Baikusheva mura — Banderitsa Hut — easy and accessible, perfect for families. The blueberries along the trail are ripe and delicious.
  • Transition to Tevnoto Lake from Vihren hut — one of the most beautiful lakes in Pirin, but keep in mind that this is long and difficult all-day hike (6-7 hours each way), suitable only for well-prepared tourists.
  • Overnight stay at Bezbog Hut — the August starry nights at 2236 m are remarkable. Mornings with coffee on the terrace are unforgettable.

✕ What NOT to do

  • Don't underestimate the rapid cooling on the peaks at the end of August — after a storm, the temperature can drop by 12–15°C in an hour. Wear a warm layer even on a sunny morning.
  • Don't go on long trips without flashlight or headlamp — the days are now shorter and if you delay, you risk returning in the dark after 8 p.m.
  • Don't rely on available chalets in the first half of August without reservation — it's still peak season on weekends.
