💡 Travel tips from Thessaloniki

  • Distance and time: The actual distance by road is ~237 km and ~3 – 3.5 hours driving (with border crossing). It is not shorter than Sofia, but it may be cheaper if you find a good flight price.
  • Border checkpoint: Promahon (highway) or Kulata are the fastest options. Usually without long queues outside of Christmas and Easter peaks.
  • Car rental — important: Always verify with the car hire company if cross-border travel to Bulgaria is permitted. Some providers apply extra fees or prohibit it entirely.
  • Winter conditions: The Kulata – Bansko road passes through mountainous sections. Ensure the vehicle has winter tyres and check snowfall conditions.
  • Combined trip: A great option if you want to include a day or two in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki or Kavala before the ski resort.
  • Transfer companies: Welcome Pickups and Kiwitaxi offer transfers from Thessaloniki - please specify "Thessaloniki Airport (SKG)" when booking.

💡 Useful tips

  • Currency: As of 1 January 2026, Bulgaria has officially adopted the Euro (€). All prices are listed in Euros, and Bulgarian Levs are no longer accepted. There is no need to use currency exchange booths!
  • Car rental and vignette: To drive outside Sofia you need an electronic vignette (e-vignette). Most rental car companies include it, but always check.
  • Book in advance: During the ski season (December - March), shared transfers fill up extremely quickly.
  • Shared vs. Private: If you are traveling alone or with two people, a "shared" transfer (Traventuria / Bansko Express) is the most economical. For 3+ people, a private taxi costs almost the same price.
  • Flight tracking: Good companies monitor delays and wait for free — check their terms before booking.
  • Ski equipment: Always note in the reservation if you are bringing your own skis/snowboards so that they can send you a suitable vehicle.
  • Winter driving (via Sofia or Thessaloniki): The road through the Struma River Gorge or the Predel Pass requires increased caution. Request winter tires from the rental car company and be sure to carry snow chains.
