Why a down jacket in summer? Clothing guide in Pirin (The layering system)

A set of hiking clothing in layers - thermal underwear, a down jacket, and a waterproof jacket, arranged on a wooden background.
If you've been walking down Pirin Street in Bansko in August, you've probably seen people with heavy backpacks and thick jackets sticking out of them. While you're sweating in short sleeves, they look like they're on an expedition. The truth is, they know something that beginners often learn the hard way: Pirin has its own climate.

At 2914 meters above sea level (Vihren Peak), summer is a relative term. Storms come in minutes, temperatures drop by 15 degrees, and the wind on the edge of the "Horse" is unforgiving. Surviving (and being comfortable) in these conditions is not possible with thick coats, but with a clever strategy called „"Layering System".

In this part of the guide, we will teach you how to dress like a "cabbage" so that you are prepared for everything - from scorching sun to freezing rain.

1. What is a „Layer System“?

Instead of one thick, heavy jacket, mountaineers wear several thin layers of clothing, allowing for fine-tuning of body temperature.

  • Are you warm? You take off one layer.
  • Is the wind blowing? You put on a windbreaker.
  • Did you stop for a break? You put on a down jacket to keep from getting cold.
ANATOMY OF THE SYSTEM:
1. Base Layer: „"Second skin" - wicks away sweat.
2. Mid Layer: Insulation – keeps the heat in.
3. Outer layer (Shell): Shield – protects from wind and rain.

2. Base layer: Forget cotton!

This is the shirt that touches your skin. Its sole purpose is to keep you dry. If you fail here, the whole system collapses.

  • Cotton = Death: The old saying “Cotton Kills” applies in full force. Cotton absorbs sweat like a sponge and does not let it go. At the first gust of wind on the ridge, a wet T-shirt will freeze you.
  • Merino wool: The best for Pirin. It doesn't smell (can be worn for 3 days without washing), is warm even when wet and regulates temperature.
    • Recommendation: Smartwool, Icebreaker or Lasting's budget models.
  • Synthetics: It dries instantly, is very strong, but smells bad quickly. Good for intensive one-day climbs.

3. Mid layer: The warmth

This layer traps the warm air your body emits. In Pirin, you need it early in the morning, in the evening at the hut, or while resting on the summit.

  • Fleece: The classic. It breathes well, dries quickly and is inexpensive. A thin micro-fleece (type 100) is a must in your backpack.
  • Down Jacket: This is your secret weapon. Modern puffs weigh as much as a chocolate bar (300g) and shrink to the size of a grapefruit.
    • Why summer? When you stop at Vihren for photos, your body cools down in seconds. The pufferfish saves you.

4. Outer layer (Shell): The armor

Without this layer, the wind will take the warmth out of your down jacket, and the rain will soak everything in. You have two choices here:

Jacket type What is he doing? When is it worn?
Hardshell (Membrane) 100% waterproof and windproof. High-class "Shushlyak" (Gore-Tex). In case of storm, heavy rain or hurricane wind. A must in your backpack!
Softshell Soft, stretchy, breathable. Protects against wind and light drizzle. In 90% from the weather. This is the most comfortable jacket for active walking.

5. What about the pants?

Pirin is rocky and overgrown with skunk. Shorts are nice for the first few kilometers, but…

  • Pants with zipper (Convertible): The most practical solution. You go in shorts from The Shiligarnika, and when you reach the squat or the rocks, you zip up the leggings.
  • Why long pants?
    1. Sun protection (UV rays at 2500m burn severely).
    2. Protection against abrasion in rocks and scree.
    3. Protection from insects and snakes (although rare at high altitude).
  • Avoid: Jeans (heavy, get steamy, dry slowly) and wedges that are not reinforced (break easily on rocks).

6. Accessories that save the day

Even in July, your backpack pocket should always have:

  • Buff (Multifunctional towel): Protect your neck from burning, your ears from the wind or your head from the sun. Get two.
  • Thin gloves: Morning of The horse The metal rope is icy cold. Thin fleece or work gloves are invaluable.
  • Hat with a visor: The sun in Pirin is unforgiving.

7. Recommended brands for Bulgaria

You don't have to go broke to get kitted out. Here's what to look for:

  • High class: Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Mammut (for those who want the best and the easiest).
  • Golden mean (Most popular in our country): Helly Hansen, The North Face, Salewa.
  • Budget heroes: Decathlon (Quechua / Forclaz). Their fleeces (MH100) and down jackets (Trek 100) are an absolute hit among mountaineers because of their value for money.
  • Bulgarian: Diel they make great jackets, albeit more ski-oriented.

Next step: You're now dressed from head to toe. There's one more key element left to help your legs (and your breathing) on the steep. Stay tuned for the next part: „"Trekking poles – are they necessary or just a fashion?"“.

Frequently asked questions about clothing

Do I have to buy everything at once?

No. Start with a good membrane (rain jacket) and comfortable shoes. In the beginning, you can use a regular fleece and a sports synthetic T-shirt from the gym. The down jacket is an investment for a later stage.

How many layers of clothing should I wear for Vihren Peak in the summer?

Start the climb lightly dressed (only thermal underwear/T-shirt) so you don't sweat. Carry a fleece and a windbreaker in your backpack. When you stop at the top, immediately put everything back on, because your body will cool down instantly.

Does a poncho raincoat work?

In Pirin, strong winds often blow. A poncho becomes a “canvas” and is very uncomfortable, and it also prevents you from seeing your feet on the rocky terrain. A jacket with a membrane and a separate raincoat for the backpack are better.
