Active Bansko: ATV and Buggy Tours – off-road adrenaline with a view of Pirin

ATV quad bike driving through muddy terrain with Pirin Mountain in the background

If you love the smell of gasoline and the feeling of power under the seat, Bansko has a lot to offer. Off-road ATV and UTV rides are the perfect way to reach inaccessible panoramic points, cross rivers and enjoy the wild side of the mountains without getting physically tired.

In the eighth part of the series „"Active Bansko"“ We start the engines and set off on dirt roads where asphalt is a dirty word.

The choice of machine: ATV or Buggy?

Depending on whether you want to actively steer with your whole body, or prefer greater comfort, you have two main options:

1. ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle)

The classic four-wheeler.

  • The feeling: You steer with a handlebar (like a motorcycle) and use your body for balance in turns and over bumps. The feel of the terrain is direct and raw.

  • For whom: For people looking for more physical engagement and adrenaline. Can ride alone or with a companion behind you.

2. Buggy/UTV (Side-by-Side)

These are machines with a steering wheel, pedals, and a roll cage, where the passenger sits next to you, not behind you.

  • The feeling: More stable and safe, buggies pass over obstacles with ease, offering a feeling close to that of a rally car.

  • For whom: Ideal for couples, families with older children, or people who want to share the emotion "side by side" without getting too dirty (most models have a windshield).

The routes: From panorama to extreme terrain

Organizers in Bansko usually offer three types of experiences, tailored to the skills of the group:

1. Panoramic tour (for beginners)

An easy and pleasant walk along the country roads between Bansko, Razlog and Banya.

  • Purpose: Enjoying the views of the three mountains (Pirin, Rila, Rhodopes) and stopping for photos at iconic places such as the Belizmata Dam or the St. George archaeological site.

  • Terrain: Mostly flat, without dangerous slopes or difficult obstacles.

2. Forest hiking and rivers (for advanced)

This is where things get serious. The routes go deep into the forest, climb steep hills at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, and often involve crossing shallow rivers or traversing muddy sections.

  • Emotion: It requires more concentration and driving skills. You are guaranteed to come back muddy but full of emotions.

3. Winter safari

When the deep one falls snow, ATVs (often equipped with chains) are one of the few ways to get off the beaten track. Drifting in the snow and trekking through the white fields of the Razlog Valley is a feeling that cannot be compared to anything else.

💰 Prices and Conditions (Season 2025)

Prices vary depending on the power of the machine (cubic meters) and the duration of the tour.

  • ATV rental (1 hour):

    • Single (for one person): 70 – 90 BGN.

    • Double (for two): 90 – 110 BGN.

  • Buggy rental (1 hour): 120 – 160 BGN (price for the machine).

  • What's included: Fuel, safety helmet, goggles and a guide who rides his machine in front of the group.

Important for safety:

  • Driver's license: Reputable companies require a valid driving license (category B) from the driver.

  • Alcohol: The check is strict – no alcohol before or during the tour.

  • Equipment: Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If it's been raining recently, mud is guaranteed (organizers often provide protective overalls, but it's a good idea to be prepared with your own old clothes and shoes).

Why try?

Off-roading in Bansko gives you access to wild corners and hidden trails that would take hours to reach on foot, but are completely inaccessible by car. It’s the perfect “masculine” fun for bachelor parties, but also a surprisingly exciting adventure for couples who want to escape the standard tourist routes and make some noise in the mountains.
