In the seventh part of the series „"Active Bansko"“ We change our hiking shoes for neoprene boots and jump into the boats to tackle the rapids.

🌊 Fast Facts: Rafting Adventure

(What do you need to know?)

River Struma (the most popular for rafting in Bulgaria)
Season March – October (Peak: April – June)
Duration About 3-4 hours (including instruction and equipment)

Why is Struma No. 1?

The Kresna Gorge is a natural phenomenon that offers ideal conditions for white water rafting. The course is about 12 km long and is full of obstacles and rapids that guarantee that no one in the boat will stay dry.

Since the gorge is only about 45 km from Bansko, rafting is the perfect day trip for resort guests. Many of the clubs also offer organized transfers from the hotel to the river and back.

When to go? Water season

The experience varies dramatically depending on the month you decide to paddle:

1. Spring (March – June): Adrenaline at its peak

This is the weather of the snowmelt in Pirin and Rila. The river is full, the rapids are powerful, and the boat literally "flies" through the waves.

  • For whom: For thrill seekers and adventurers. The water is cold, but the adrenaline rush keeps you warm.

2. Summer and Fall (July – October): Fun and Relaxation

The water level drops, making the river more technical (more maneuvering between the rocks is required), but also safer.

  • For whom: Ideal for families with children, beginners and people who want to combine sports with beach and jumping into the water from the rocks.

How does a descent work?

You don't need any prior experience or special physical training. Here are the steps:

  1. Instruction: A professional guide conducts a mandatory safety briefing and explains the commands ("Forward!", "Stop!", "Everyone down!").

  2. Equipment: You will be provided with a wetsuit, helmet, life jacket and special shoes. You are only required to wear a swimsuit and a towel.

  3. Action: You get into the boat (the raft), which holds between 6 and 8 people plus the instructor. He steers the course, and you are the "engine".

  4. Final: The descent ends with smiles, photos and often – with a delicious lunch at the club base.

Alternatives: Kayaking and Canyoning

If classic rafting seems too commercial to you, the gorge offers other options:

  • Kayaking in fast waters: Here you are alone or with two people in a smaller and more maneuverable boat. The feeling of the water element is much more intense, but it also requires better balance.

  • Canyoning: This is an adventure without a boat. You rappel down waterfalls and rock chutes with ropes, jump into pools and slide down natural water slides. The waterfalls near the village of Vlachi are a popular location for this activity.

💰 Prices and Services (Season 2025)

Rafting is one of the most accessible extreme activities in the region.

  • Classic rafting: 60 – 90 BGN per person (includes full equipment and a licensed instructor).

  • Photos and Videos: Most clubs provide a professional photographer who takes pictures of the boats from the shore in the most attractive areas. The shots are often included in the price or paid for symbolically.

  • Transport from Bansko: Some clubs offer a transfer for an additional fee (around 20-30 BGN).

Safety

Rafting is an extreme sport, but when practiced with an established club, the risks are minimized. The instructors are certified (according to the standards of the IRF - International Rafting Federation) and know every stone in the river. The life jacket and helmet are mandatory and are not removed until the final exit to the shore.

So, if you want to see the region from a different angle and experience the power of nature, Struma awaits you. And don't forget – there are no dry people here, only happy people!
