Active Bansko: Swimming and mineral waters – sport and relaxation in one

Luxury SPA hotel in Bansko with an outdoor mineral pool and views of the snow-capped peaks of Pirin.

After climbing peaks on bikes, riding horses and rafting down, the body inevitably needs rest. But in Bansko, recovery can also be an active part of the experience.

The region is endowed with a natural wealth that few mountain resorts in the world possess – an abundance of healing mineral water just 5 kilometers from the ski slopes. In the tenth (and perhaps most relaxing) part of the series „"Active Bansko"“ We put on our swimming goggles and dive into the pools of Banya and Dobrinishte.

Sport swimming: Where to do lengths?

Many people associate mineral pools only with leisurely relaxation and cocktails, but the region also has excellent conditions for serious swimming training.

1. The city beach in Dobrinishte

This is an iconic place for both locals and tourists. The complex (known as "Alpha") features a large Olympic-sized swimming pool, powered entirely by mineral water.

  • For swimmers: There is enough space here to do lengths without bumping into other beachgoers, especially in the morning hours.

  • Water: The temperature is pleasant for sports - it is not too hot, which allows for cardio exercise without the risk of overheating.

2. Banya Village: The SPA Capital of the Region

Just a 5-minute drive from Bansko, the village of Banya lies on dozens of mineral springs. Almost every hotel here has a swimming pool, but some are more suitable for sports than others.

  • The large pools: Complexes such as "Izgrev", "Roman Baths" or "Seven Seasons" offer large enough pools where you can combine sport with pleasure.

  • The contrast: There's nothing better than swimming outdoors in the winter while it's raining around you. snow, and the water maintains a constant 36 degrees.

3. Indoor pools in Bansko

If you prefer indoor spaces, the 5-star hotels in Bansko (such as Kempinski, Lucky Bansko, etc.) have modern indoor pools with innovative purification systems (chlorine-free), which are also available to external visitors for a fee or a monthly subscription.

Recovery: The Secret of Champions

Why do professional athletes choose Bansko for their camps? It's not just because of the clean air. The combination of high-altitude training and subsequent immersion in mineral water is the "gold standard" for physical recovery.

  • How it works: The mineral water in Banya and Dobrinishte is slightly mineralized, hyperthermal and rich in fluorine. It helps to quickly remove lactic acid from the muscles, relieves joint pain and calms the nervous system.

  • Tip: After a tough hike to Vihren Peak or a full day of skiing, 30 minutes of swimming and relaxing in the warm water is equal to hours of professional massage.

💰 Prices and Access (Season 2025)

Access to the mineral beaches and pools is paid, with prices varying according to the season and category of the property.

  • Entrance to the outdoor pool (Banya/Dobrinishte): 15 – 25 BGN per adult (full-day stay).

  • Entrance to SPA centers in hotels (Bansko): 30 – 60 BGN (often includes use of sauna, steam bath and indoor pool).

  • Swimming cards: Some complexes offer discount cards for multiple visits for residents and long-term residents.

What do you need?

Unlike complicated skiing or climbing equipment, the luggage here is light:

  1. Swimming cap: It is mandatory in more sporty and larger pools to maintain hygiene.

  2. Flip-flops and towel: Most places offer towels for rent, but it is advisable to bring your own.

  3. Drinking water: Even though you are in water, swimming in a warm mineral pool dehydrates the body faster than usual.

Swimming is a sport that doesn't put a strain on the joints, but it trains the entire body. And when you do it with a view of the snow-capped peaks of Pirin, it becomes a pure pleasure for the senses.
