1. Healthcare: Doctors, hospitals and pharmacies

Everyone's hope is to never have to seek medical attention while in the mountains, but responsible relocation requires being fully prepared for any situation.

Emergency care and Hospital treatment

In Bansko itself, there is a branch of the Emergency Medical Care Center (EMSC), which responds to calls on the 112 telephone number. However, for more serious cases and hospitalization, the Hospital Razlog (the large regional hospital), which is located only 5 kilometers from Bansko. It is surprisingly well equipped for the size of the area, with an excellent surgical and orthopedic team, as it takes on hundreds of cases of injuries from the ski area in the winter.

Personal doctor (GP) and medical centers

If you are planning a long-term stay and pay your health insurance in Bulgaria, you have the right (and obligation) to choose a GP (GP) in the city. Most locals and nomads use the services of Holy Annunciation Medical Center“, located in the heart of Bansko. Some of the most recommended specialists work here.

• For foreigners (EU citizens): If you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), it will cover all emergencies and non-urgent conditions. However, for routine check-ups, it is best to have additional private health insurance.
• Paid Reviews: Even if you don't have insurance in Bulgaria, private checkups are extremely affordable by Western standards – a checkup with a specialist usually costs between 40 and 60 leva. Many of the doctors here speak excellent English due to the constant flow of tourists and expats.

Dentists (Dental care)

Bansko is famous for its excellent dental clinics. The offices are equipped with the most modern equipment (including 3D X-rays), and the quality of services is world-class. Many digital nomads combine their stay here with a complete smile makeover, as the prices are many times lower than in the UK or Germany.

2. Internet and digital connectivity

For the modern remote professional, stable internet is more important than hot water. The good news is that Bulgaria is traditionally in the top 20 countries with the fastest internet in the world, and Bansko is no exception.

Home fiber optic internet (Fiber Optic)

One of the first things you should do is check the network in your accommodation. Never rely on the basic Wi-Fi provided by your landlord or the complex if you are working with large files or making constant video calls.

• National operators: A1, Vivacom and Yettel offer optical connectivity to the home with excellent speeds (up to 1 Gbps) and stability.
• Local suppliers: Local cable operators are often preferred by locals because their technical teams are physically in the city and respond to outages within minutes, not days.

Mobile Internet (4G/5G)

The 4G and 5G coverage in the city is absolutely impeccable. What’s more, the network is built to withstand the huge influx of tourists in winter. As a result, the signal is surprisingly strong even high up in the mountains. It’s not uncommon to see people answering urgent work emails while riding the gondola.

3. Address registration in Bansko (Settlement)

If you plan to stay in the city for more than 3 months, Bulgarian law requires you to officially register your address. The procedure varies dramatically depending on your citizenship.

For Bulgarian citizens (Current address)

The procedure is quick and takes place in the Bansko Municipality building (GRAO department). Having a current address is critically important not only to receive official correspondence, but also to be able to get a preferential parking sticker in the “Blue Zone” if you own a car.

• Required documents: You must present a valid rental agreement and a copy of the property deed.
• Owner consent: The most important condition is that the property owner must appear in person before the municipal employee to sign a declaration of consent, or provide you with a notarized declaration in advance.

For EU Citizens (Long-term Residence Certificate)

If you are a foreigner from an EU country, your procedure does not go through the Municipality, but through the Migration Service at the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior (Police in Bansko).

• Procedure: You submit an application accompanied by a notarized rental agreement, a valid passport/ID card, proof of financial independence (a bank account balance proving that you will not be a burden on the social security system) and a valid health insurance card (EHIC).
• Result: You will receive your certificate immediately on paper, and the official plastic (the residence card containing your PIN/LNF) will be issued after about 30 days. This card is your golden key to concluding internet contracts in your name and opening bank accounts.

4. Logistics: Couriers, deliveries and online shopping

Since there are no huge shopping centers (malls) in Bansko, online shopping will quickly become your main way to source specific goods, equipment, and cosmetics.

• National couriers (Econt and Speedy): Their infrastructure in the city is well developed. They have numerous offices and outdoor vending machines (lockers). Everything you order from online stores in Bulgaria arrives reliably the next business day.
• International deliveries (Amazon, etc.): Direct deliveries from Amazon.de to Bulgaria are possible, but many Bansko residents use intermediary logistics companies (such as GGBG or Gabco). You order the goods to their warehouse in Germany, and they transport it to Bulgaria at a very low price (about 3-4 BGN per kilogram) in about 7 to 10 days, then forward it via Econt/Speedy to Bansko.
