In early April, the avalanche danger is grade 1–2 (low to moderate) in most areas. However the wet spring avalanches In the afternoon, the snow-covered gullies around Vihren remain a real threat. Follow the bulletin before going above 2000 m.

Until mid-April the lower areas of Pirin (below 1600 m) become completely accessible without winter equipment. The routes to Banderitsa Hut and Demyanitsa Hut are among the first to see the snow melt. Bring gaiters for the wet areas.

April is the month of the mountain crocuses and the bluebells — they literally die out under the melting snow. The forest around Banderishka meadow is extremely beautiful. The wildlife is active: wild goats, roe deer and wild pigs are more visible than ever.

  • Transition by Demyanitsa Valley to the hut of the same name — spring waterfalls and crocuses make this route extremely photogenic.
  • Walk around Bayuvi Dupki-Djindzhiritsa in the lower areas — the reserve is remarkably quiet and untouched after the winter closure.
  • Walk to The Caves area and the St. Nicholas chapel — an easy and very pleasant route at the very foot of the mountain, ideal for early spring.

✕ What NOT to do

  • Don't try to reach Vihren, The horse or Tevno Lake without alpine equipment — the upper areas are still snowy and icy in the morning.
  • Don't go on upper routes in the afternoon — wet avalanches and unstable wet snow are treacherous especially in the afternoon hours of a warm day.
  • Don't count on that. The huts are open. — most mountain huts in Pirin only open in late May or June. Check in advance.
