The High Mountain in October

The upper areas are already winterized — the focus is on the lower forest routes and the autumn beauty.

❄️ First snow on the peaks

October brings the first permanent snow in the areas above 2000–2200 m. The temperatures in Vihren are now between -4° and +4°C. The upper routes — Vihren, The horse, Tevno Lake — require winter gear: beanies, gaiters, warm clothing. Without proper preparation — do not go above 1800 m.

🏠 Cottages — They are closing one by one

Most mountain huts closed between October 1 and 15. Vihren Hut and Banderitsa may work until the middle of the month, but without guarantee. Be sure to check before leaving — the disappointment of a closed hut at 2000 m on a cold October day is a real scenario.

🍂 The Lower Forests — In full bloom

While the upper areas are already winter, the forests between 900 and 1600 m are at their absolute autumn peak. The routes to Banderishka meadow, along the Demyanitsa Valley and in the Bayuvi Dupki area are extremely beautiful. The October Forest with a yellow-orange dome overhead is unforgettable.

📷 Photography — Last Chance

October gives last chance for autumn photography before the leaves fall. The contrast between the snowy peaks and the fiery forests at the foothills is unique only for these 2–3 weeks. The early morning light around 8–9 a.m. gives a magical warm light on the wet leaves.
