Botanical Kingdom: 1/3 of Bulgaria's flora
The diverse relief, specific climate and glacial past of the mountain have created the perfect conditions for the development of an exceptionally rich vegetation. It is believed that on the territory of Pirin there is about one third of the entire flora of Bulgaria. This includes centuries-old coniferous forests of white and black fir, Scots pine and spruce, which purify the air and protect the slopes from erosion.
18 local endemics: Plants you won't see anywhere else
Endemics are species whose distribution is limited to a specific geographical area. Within the borders of the National Park, entire 18 local endemics. They have evolved in isolation on the high rocky peaks and screes of the mountain. Among the most emblematic representatives are:
- Pirin poppy (Papaver degenii): A delicate yellow flower that thrives at incredible heights among the harsh marble scree, withstanding strong winds.
- Thymus perinicus: In addition to its beautiful flowers, it is distinguished by a specific aroma that fills the air in the high mountain pastures.
- David's mullet (Verbascum davidovii): An extremely rare and beautiful plant, named after the famous Bulgarian botanist Bozhimir Davidov.
The Fauna of Pirin: From the Heavenly Lords to the Microscopic Inhabitants
The rich biodiversity of Pirin is not limited to plants. The mountain provides a safe home, food and breeding conditions for a huge number of animal species. The forests and alpine meadows above Bansko are full of life.
Mammals and Birds: Lords of the Forest and the Sky
Official data indicate that the park is home to 50 species of mammals. Here the brown bear, the wolf, the red deer, the roe deer and the wild boar find their natural habitat. High in the rocky parts, if you are quiet enough and lucky enough, you can catch a glimpse of the graceful chamois – one of the symbols of Pirin.
Ornithologists and bird lovers also have reason to admire. In the mountains nest 166 species of birds. From the small songbirds in the lowlands to the majestic golden eagle and peregrine falcon that patrol over the marble ridge of Vihren and The horse.
The Invisible Army: Over 2,000 Species of Invertebrates
