Owner's Handbook (Part 2): Veterinary Care and Emergencies – Doctors, Pharmacies and Dangers

Being a farmer in the mountains is wonderful, but it requires preparation. In Bansko and the region, veterinary care is at a good level, but it is important to know where to go before an emergency should occur.

The most important rule here is: For serious manipulations and X-rays, the center is the town of Razlog (5 km from Bansko).

1. Veterinary clinics in the region

There are smaller clinics and pet stores in Bansko itself, but for emergencies, most local owners rely on the clinics in the neighboring town of Razlog.

  • In Bansko: Suitable for vaccines, deworming and minor ailments.
  • In Razlog (5-10 min by car): They have better equipment (ultrasound, X-ray) and the ability to perform surgeries.

Always keep the vet's number saved in your phone.

2. Dangers in Pirin: What should we be careful of?

The mountain poses risks that are not found in a city park. Here are the three biggest ones:

⚠️ Pine processionary (Spring/Autumn)

This is the biggest enemy of dogs in the area. The caterpillars move in a “procession” (thread) on the ground. Contact with them causes a severe allergic reaction and necrosis of the tongue/muzzle.

Emergency help: If your dog touches such a caterpillar, wash its muzzle thoroughly with water (do not rub!) and go to the vet immediately. Every minute counts.

???? Snakes (Cinderellas)

In the summer, there are vipers on the rocky paths (especially towards Vihren hut). If your dog is bitten, do not cut or suck out the venom. Carry him in your arms to the car so that his blood circulation does not increase.

3. Mountain First Aid Kit

If you are going on a long hike in Pirin, carry in your backpack:

  • Urbazone/Antihistamine: (Consult a veterinarian for dosage!) – life-saving in case of snake or insect bite.
  • Bandage and adhesive bandage: For cut paws on sharp stones.
  • Tick tweezers.

Next step

The dog is healthy and protected. It's time for adventures! But where is it allowed to let him loose?
