Logistics: How to get to the Macedonia hut?
The hut is located in one of the most isolated parts of the mountain, making it difficult to access but also extremely peaceful. The main approach is from the south side of Rila.
Option 1: The classic route through Semkovo resort
This is the most popular and easiest option for reaching Macedonia hut. The starting point is the Semkovo resort, located about 17 km above the town of Belitsa.
- By car: The road to Semkovo is asphalt, although with bumps. From the resort, continue uphill along a forest road to the Dinkov Dol area. Attention: This road is passable for cars only in its initial part. It is recommended to leave the car at the end of the asphalt or at the beginning of the dirt road, unless you have a high jeep (4×4).
- Hiking: Following the blue and green markings, you will enter a beautiful coniferous forest. The path is wide (former forest roads) and gradually gains altitude. After crossing several streams, the steeper climb through the spruce belt begins until you reach the Mechi Prohod saddle itself.
- Duration: Around 2.30 – 3.00 hours (depending on where you start walking).
Option 2: From the village of Dobarsko (For the hardy)
The route from the village of Dobarsko is significantly longer and has a greater elevation gain, but offers unique views of Pirin. It follows the river valley, and the final climb is steep. It is suitable for well-prepared tourists. Duration: 4.30 – 5.00 hours.
Conditions and Accommodation in the Macedonia Chalet
Chalet Macedonia is a massive two-story stone building designed to withstand harsh winter conditions. It is a typical representative of the “old school” in tourism – you will not find hotel luxury here, but you will find warmth and coziness.
- Bedrooms: Accommodation is mostly in rooms with many beds (bunks and bunk beds). The rooms are clean and the beds are provided with wool blankets. However, we recommend that you bring your own “sleeping bag liner” for hygiene and extra comfort.
- Heating and water: The hut is heated by solid fuel, with the warmest being in the common dining room. It can be cool in the bedrooms, especially at night, even in summer. The sanitary facilities are internal, but common to the floor. Hot water is not a constant value and depends on the load and the solar collectors.
- Electricity: The hut has a generator and photovoltaics. There is a possibility to charge phones in the canteen, but it is a good idea to bring an external battery (Power Bank).
Food and Cuisine
After the long trek, food is of paramount importance. The cuisine of Macedonia hut is simple but nutritious. The hut owners maintain a menu of basic cooked dishes:
- The legendary hut bean and lentil soup;
- Grilled meatballs and kebabs;
- Omelets with cheese;
- Pancakes (often offered for breakfast);
- Cold beer, Rila herb tea and coffee.
Routes from the Macedonia hut
Located on the strategic Bear Pass, the hut is an ideal base for radial walks or as a stop on the international E4 route.
1. Climbing Golyam Mechi Vrah (2617 m)
The peak rises directly above the hut. The climb is steep, but short – it takes about 40-50 minutes. From the top, one of the most impressive panoramas in Bulgaria opens up – you can see the entire Rila, Pirin, Rhodope Mountains, and on clear days even the mountains in Greece and North Macedonia.
2. Transition to Ribni Ezera hut (Along the ridge)
This is one of the most beautiful panoramic sleepers in Rila. The trail follows the main ridge, passes through Angelov Vrah peak and descends to the Fish Lakes.
Duration: 6-7 hours.
Difficulty: High (requires endurance).
3. Small Bear Peak (2474 m)
It is located opposite the Big Bear Peak, on the other side of the saddle. The walk there is pleasant and not too strenuous, suitable for a "warm-up" or afternoon activity.
Conclusion: Who is the chalet suitable for?
Chalet Macedonia is not for “Sunday tourists” looking for luxury and asphalt at the entrance. It is for true mountaineers who value silence, endless horizons and a sense of freedom. Located at the crossroads between Rila and Pirin, it remains one of the last bastions of authentic tourism. If you want to feel the true spirit of South Rila in 2026 – this is your place.
