History and Atmosphere: The Legacy of “Eltepe”
Although today we know her as Vihren hut, its history begins under the name “Eltepe” (the old name of the peak). Its construction was a true logistical feat, carried out in the period 1939–1941 by the Bansko Tourist Association. Imagine the efforts required to erect such a massive stone structure without modern technology, right on the eve of World War II.
The location was not chosen by chance. The hut is perched on a rocky ledge on the left bank of the Banderitsa River, where the valley narrows, and the marble giants Vihren and Hvoynati Vrh loom protectively over its roof. In the mornings, the “hive” here comes to life as early as 5:30 a.m. – the aroma of mountain tea mixes with the sound of backpacks tightening and the clatter of poles on the old floorboards.
Contacts, Reservations and Internet at 1950 m.
Planning an overnight stay in Vihren hut requires strategy, as this is one of the most sought-after locations in Bulgaria. Forget about online reservation systems – everything happens here the classic way.

The Restaurant: Menu and the “Cult of Beans”
Meals at the hut are self-service. The kitchen is simple but essential for any mountaineer. Here, food is not just calories, but a ritual.
What is a must-try?
- Bean soup: Legendary for the site – thick, with a light smoky aroma and local herbs.
- Tripe soup: The best medicine after a tough transition (it ends quickly!).
- Birch tea: Prepared from Mursal tea and locally harvested herbs.
- Grill: Classic meatballs and kebabs, served with chutney.
Important for payments: Bring cash! Despite the presence of a POS terminal, the satellite connection often breaks during storms or cloudy weather. In the mountains, cash is the only safe currency.
Logistics: How to get there without fines?
Access to Vihren hut is a paradox – an asphalt road leads to it, but getting there by car in the summer is a challenge due to the strict regulations of the Bansko Municipality and Pirin National Park.
Summer mode (July – September)
The road from the area "“The Shiligarnika”"to the hut is closed to private vehicles between 08:00 and 16:00. Your options are:
- Minibus: It departs from the Bansko Bus Station and the starting station of the lift. The price is about 10-15 BGN one way.
- On foot: From Banderishka meadow (terminal station of the cable car) the hike is about 30-40 minutes along a marked trail.
- Early arrival: If you cross the barrier before 7:30 AM, you can get on, but there are only about a dozen parking spaces upstairs and they are often occupied from the night before.

1. Vihren Peak (2914 m) – Southern route
Time: 3:00 – 3:30 (in direction).
The classic climb. The path is steep, winding through the “Kabata” area. It is not technically difficult, but requires good cardio training. The view from the top to The horse and the lakes are indescribable.
2. Lake Okoto
Time: 15-20 minutes.
The lowest lake in the Banderishta group. Perfect for a leisurely stroll after lunch. It has a characteristic round shape and emerald color.
3. Muratovo lake
Time: 1 hour.
One of the most photogenic places in Pirin. Its crystal clear waters overlook Mount Todorka. The path is smooth and pleasant, suitable for families with children.
4. Kazana Circus and the North Wall

A route for connoisseurs and more experienced mountaineers. Here you will see the “eternal snow” at the foot of the sheer 400-meter wall of Vihren and the unique Edelweiss flower.
5. Transition to Sinanitsa hut
Time: 4 hours.
An epic hike through Banderishka Gate. Sinanitsa is considered one of the most beautiful huts because of its alpine silhouette and the lake of the same name in front of it.
Equipment and Safety: What to know?
Pirin is a harsh mountain. Even in summer, temperatures Vihren hut can drop to 5-6 degrees at night.
- Sun protection: Marble reflects UV rays. SPF 50 sunscreen is a must.
- Shoes: Forget about sneakers. You need shoes with a hard sole and a high board to protect your ankles.
- Water: Fill your bottles from the fountain in front of the hut. There is no water source on the route to the summit.
