Imagine a place where the mountain is so steep that the sun only appears for a few hours, and the snow refuses to melt even in August. Between the formidable northern wall of Vihren Peak and the marble ribs of Kutelo Peak lies the most impressive natural amphitheater in Bulgaria - The Kazans in Pirin.
For many tourists who set off from Bansko, it is just a stop on the way to the summit. But for true connoisseurs, the area is a destination in itself. This is the kingdom of the Balkan chamois, the home of the most beautiful edelweiss and the place with the most dramatic acoustics in the mountains. In this detailed guide, we will take you step by step through the route, the dangers and the secrets of the Big and Small Kazan.

What are “Kazanites” and why are they unique?
Geologically speaking, Kazan is circuses – deep, cup-shaped depressions carved by ancient glaciers into the marble structure of Pirin. Their name comes from their specific shape, which literally resembles a huge cauldron from which there is no easy escape.
The difference between the Small and the Big Kazan
Climbing from the hut, you pass successively through the two formations:
- Small Kazan (2200 m): It is located lower, its bottom is covered with grass and sedge. This is the “green entrance” to the high mountain. Tourists often stop here for their first more serious vacation.
- The Big Kazan (2400 m): This is the heart of the region. Its bottom is covered with rocks (moraines), and because of the 400-meter sheer wall of Vihren Peak, which overshadows it, a unique microclimate is formed here. It is here that permanent snow cover (firn), which does not melt year-round. Photo with snow in July or August is a classic for every visitor to The Kazans in Pirin.
The Living World: Goats and Edelweiss
Despite the harsh conditions, life here is bustling. If you are quiet and observant, Kazan will reward you with views worthy of a National Geographic documentary.
The Edelweiss: The Star of Pirin
Kazante is one of the few and most accessible locations of Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) in Bulgaria. These mossy, silvery flowers love limestone (marble) rocks and grow on the hard-to-reach terraces above the trail.
When does it bloom? The best time to see edelweiss in bloom is during July and August.
Wild goats (Balkan Chamois)
This is probably the safest place in Pirin where you can see herds of wild goats up close. They use the steep cliffs of the North Face of Vihren as a refuge from predators. They often descend into the Big Kazan to drink water from the melting snow or “lick” salts from the rocks. If you sit quietly by the shelter, they often pass only meters from people.
Full route description: Vihren Hut – Kazanite
The route is part of the international road E-4 and is marked with red tape marking. Here's what to expect at each stage:
Stage 1: The Start (30 min)
You start from Vihren hut (which can be reached by car or minibus from Bansko). The trail starts steeply up the left slope, right opposite the entrance to the hut. At the beginning you walk among stones and a sparse shrubbery.
Stage 2: The fork and the river (20 min)
You will reach a marked fork. The path on the right (with blue and yellow markings) leads to Banderitsa hut and “Kazanite” (via another path, but not recommended for climbing). You continue left and up along the red markings. You will soon cross a small mountain stream – this is the last safe place to fill up with water!
Stage 3: Under Jamdzhievi Rocks (40 min)
The path becomes increasingly rocky and steep. To your left rises the formidable rock edge of “Djamdzhievi Rocks”. You have to be careful here, because the terrain is loose. After a series of switchbacks, the slope decreases and you enter the grassy depression of Little Kazan.
Stage 4: The finale to the Great Cauldron (30 min)
From Malkia Kazan there is another steep but short climb. The path winds between large white rocks. Suddenly the horizon opens up and a magnificent view of the The Great Kazan with the shelter at the bottom.
Kazana Shelter: Salvation, not a hotel
In the center of the Big Kazan you will see a small, green metal box. This is the “Kazan” shelter. It is attached to the rocks with steel ropes so that it will not be blown away by the hurricane winds that often rage here.
It is important to know that this It is NOT a hut.:
- There is no lodger or staff.
- There is no food or drink.
- There is no toilet.
- It is intended for emergency situations (storm, thunder, trauma).
It can accommodate 4-5 people on wooden bunks. If the weather It's nice, just use it for a short break and photos.
Safety: When NOT to go?
The Kazans have two radically different faces throughout the seasons. A misjudgment here can be fatal.
☀️ Summer dangers
In summer the main risks are the falling stones. Since you are in a “cup”, and above you are the cliffs of Vihren and Kutelo, erosion or animals often push stones. Be alert, especially if you hear a noise from above.
❄️ Winter dangers
Extreme avalanche danger! Kazan is a classic “avalanche reservoir”. Snow accumulates in huge quantities and falls spontaneously. Winter hikes here are only for professionals with full avalanche equipment (pips, probe, shovel) and serious experience.
What to put in your backpack?
Even for a day trip to The Kazans in Pirin, you should be prepared:
- Shoes: High hiking boots (required!). The terrain is entirely made of crushed marble and your ankles are under strain.
- Outerwear: Even if it's 30 degrees down in Bansko, in Kazani there is often an icy wind and the temperature is 10-15 degrees lower. A windbreaker or membrane jacket is a must.
- Water: At least 1.5 liters per person. After the stream in the lowlands, there are no water sources.
- Sun protection: The white marble reflects the sun like a mirror. You can get sunburned in minutes. Sunglasses and sunscreen are a must.
