🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
Reaching the starting point is an adventure in itself. Zagaza Hut„ is located in the western foothills of Pirin. It is most often reached from the town of Kresna. From Kresna you have to take a long, extremely bad and rutted dirt road past the village of Vlahi and the Peshterata area. The distance is about 20-25 km, but it takes hours. The use of a serious off-road jeep (4×4) is mandatory. The alternative is to leave your car in Kresna or Vlahi and plan a whole day just for walking to the hut along the dirt road.
🥾 Description of the route
1. From the Zagaza hut up through the forest
The route starts from the hut and immediately goes steeply uphill. You follow the brown markings that wind through dense and lush mixed forests. The slope is uncompromising from the very beginning. The terrain is covered with bushes and roots, which requires a steady step.
2. Exiting the forest belt and squatting
After about 2.5 – 3 hours of exhausting climbing, the trees begin to thin out and give way to dense stands of junipers. Here the trail can sometimes be overgrown, so it is important to follow the markings carefully. The first panoramas to the west towards the Vlahina River valley open up.
3. The storming of Mount Albutin
Coming out into the Alpine belt, the huge western slope of Mount Albutin rises before you. The hardest part begins – a climb over rocky scree and grassy tuffs without a clear path, following mainly the relief and stone pyramids. The elevation difference here is literally a wall. Reaching the summit (2688 m) rewards you with a phenomenal view of Vihren and Kutelo.
4. Descent to Suhodolski Pass
From Albutin Peak, head north/northwest along the marble ridge. You will have a short but careful descent along the stones to the Sukhodolski Preval saddle. Here route No. 19 ends, merging with the red marking (E4).
🛖 Basic information about the site (Zagaza Hut)
The hut is small, isolated and offers very basic conditions, but it compensates with incredible hospitality and an authentic Pirin atmosphere.
- 📌 Tip: Due to the remoteness of the hut, always call in advance to make sure there is a hut attendant.

- ☀️ Season: Optimal period for the transition to Albutin: July – September.
- 🛏️ Beds: It has limited capacity (about 20-25 seats).

- ☎️ Reservations phone: 0882 966 438 (the phone number may change, check in advance; the range at the hut is minimal).
⚠️ Important to know
This route is extremely wild and rarely visited. The brown markings may be faded or missing in places. Be sure to carry a charged GPS tracker on your phone! There is water only in the first third of the route (in the forest belt). During the assault to Albutin and at the very top it is completely dry – carry at least 2-3 liters per person.
Attention: In winter, the marble slopes of Albutin are deadly avalanche-prone. The crossing is only possible in summer conditions!
