The welcome of New Year in Bansko is an emotion that is planned months in advance. The city is not just filling up – it is bursting at the seams. The biggest question on every tourist’s mind is not “will there be snow”, but “"Where will I celebrate and how much will it cost me?"”.
1. Restaurants and Kuverti: How does the system work?
Unlike ordinary evenings, on December 31 in Bansko there is no "free consumption"“. All establishments – from the smallest tavern to 5-star restaurants – operate with fixed seating.
What does the envelope usually include?
The price of the envelope is not just for the food. You are paying for the entire experience (“all-night dining”). The standard package includes:
- Salad: Usually "Ovcharska", "Shopska" or a mix of pickles.
- Appetizer: Dry appetizers (Banski starec), cabbage rolls or stuffed peppers.
- Mainly: Traditional kapama, roast pig or beef steaks.
- Dessert: Banitsa with good luck (mandatory!), nuts and fruits.
- Alcohol: 50-100 g of brandy, ½ bottle of wine and champagne for midnight.
- PROGRAM: Live music, DJ, dance ensemble or guest artist.

3. Traditions: January 1st and the "Babugers"“
After a tough night at the restaurant, New Year in Bansko continues on the street. On January 1st, at exactly 11:00 a.m., Nikola Vaptsarov Square becomes the arena of the Kukeri carnival.
This is the day of the “Babugerites”. Local men put on goatskin suits (which are not washed for decades to preserve their power) and huge gongs. The roar drives away evil and guarantees a healthy year. This is a free spectacle that you should not miss.
