An architectural masterpiece of the centuries
The building is a typical representative of Balkan architecture from the Ottoman period. Although it was built centuries ago, it is built on the foundations of much older, ancient traditions of using the healing mineral water, which date back to the weather of the Thracians.
Main characteristics of the site:
- Style: A domed structure, typical of the era, which ensures strength and natural thermoregulation.
- Materials: A masterful combination of river stones and the flat red bricks characteristic of the region, bonded with extremely strong mortar.
- Natural light: Small openings in the dome, known as "eyelets," allow the sun's rays to cut through the steam, creating an almost mystical atmosphere inside the rooms.
Why is it called "Roman" if it is from the 17th century?
The name is a result of cultural continuity. The region of the village of Banya has been famous for its over 70 mineral springs since the time of the Roman Empire. The old bathhouse was built according to a model that strictly follows the classical Roman concept of balneology and hygiene.
| Element | Function and description |
|---|---|
| Detention | A changing room and a place for visitors to prepare before a bath. |
| Central room | The place where the hot mineral water pool is located. |
| Hypocaust | An ancient underfloor heating system using the heat of water. |
Location and how to get there
The monument is located in the very heart of the village of Banya. Its location is extremely convenient for guests of the region who are looking for cultural diversity outside the ski slopes or SPA hotels.
Distance to the site:
- 📍 From Bansko: 15 minutes by car.
- 📍 From Razlog: 10 minutes by car.
- 📍 From Blagoevgrad: About 50-60 minutes through the Predel Pass.
Cultural significance and restoration
Thanks to its meticulous restoration, today the bathhouse is the center of cultural life in the village. Around it is a modern and well-maintained park area, which is a favorite place for walks. Folklore festivals are often held here, combining the magic of history with the living traditions of the Pirin region.
A visit to the Old Bathhouse is much more than a look at an ancient building. It is a touch of eternity - where the silence of the centuries-old stone meets the incessant murmur of the healing mineral water.
