Why exactly? autumn?
For many seasoned mountaineers, autumn is the absolute peak of the year. The summer heat and crowds are gone, and the air is so clear that you can often see the mountains of Greece from the peaks. This is the weather of the "gypsy summer" in Pirin.
In the lower parts of the park (up to 1600 m), mixed and beech forests explode in yellow, orange and red. The high alpine belt is calm - the typical summer afternoon thunderstorms are absent, which allows for longer ridge hikes, as long as you are prepared for the decreasing daylight.
September offers a perfect balance: the chalets are still operating at full capacity, the lifts are running, and the weather is mild. October already brings the first frosts, frozen puddles in the morning, and the feeling of winter approaching.
Biggest Challenge: The Short Day
If summer forgives late departures because it is light until 9:00 p.m., autumn does not tolerate such mistakes. In October, the sun hides behind the high Pirin peaks as early as 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and temperatures drop sharply and go below zero.
An early start is absolutely mandatory for long routes. A headlamp with spare batteries ceases to be "recommended" and becomes a vital part of the equipment.
The face of the autumn Pirin
Golden forests
Although Pirin is mostly a coniferous mountain, the valleys of the Banderitsa and Demyanitsa rivers, as well as the area around Yavorov Hut, offer breathtaking beech forests in autumn colors.
Flowers · Walks · BeechStable weather
September often offers long periods of high atmospheric pressure. This means clear skies, no wind, and minimal risk of summer convective storms.
Gypsy Summer · Clear SkyCrystal Lakes
Without the summer haze, the air is crystal clear. The lakes become perfect mirrors, reflecting the peaks and the yellowing grasses. Ideal for photography.
Reflections · PhotographySilence and tranquility
The kids are at school, the holidays are over. On routes where you passed hundreds of people in August, you may not meet anyone for hours now.
Privacy · RelaxationCold mornings
The temperature ranges are huge. At 07:00 in the morning in front of Vihren hut it could be -2°C, and at 13:00 in the afternoon you could be climbing in a short sleeve at +18°C. Dressing in layers is key.
Nightingales · Puchenka · ThermosThe roar of the deer
The end of September and October is the mating season for red deer. Their powerful roar is often heard in the forests - one of the wildest experiences.

The ridge transition: H. Vihren → Koncheto
The stable weather in September is ideal for The horse. The lack of thunder gives peace of mind, but leave at 06:30 so that you don't get caught in the dark on the way back.
Autumn gifts and meetings
The mountain is preparing for winter. This is a time of abundance in the lower zones and increased activity among animals.
Wild mushrooms
Mushrooms and chanterelles pop up in the damp forests after a September rain.
Blueberries
Sweet, ripe blueberries can still be found in the high meadows.
Red deer
The males fill the forests with their roar during the breeding season.
Jay
Hyperactive in the fall, it hides acorns and seeds for the upcoming winter.
Yellow larches
The only conifer that changes color and sheds its needles.
Temperature inversions
Often in the morning Bansko is in fog, and above 1500 m the sun shines brightly.
Animals in stock
Marmots and squirrels are gathering their last supplies before hibernation.
Hazelnuts and rose hips
The forests are full of fruits, feeding the entire ecosystem before the snows.
Chalets and lifts in the fall
September is a wonderful month for tourism, because almost all the summer infrastructure is working normally, but without the crowds. Reservations for the chalets (Vihren, Demyanitsa, Bezbog) are becoming easier, although for weekends you still need to call in advance.
Attention for October! In October, things change dramatically. The cable car in Bansko and the lift to Bezbog hut usually stop for technical maintenance before the winter season. Some of the high-mountain shelters (such as Tevno Lake) may switch to winter mode (without a permanent hut keeper and hot food).
💡 Tip: Always call the lodges a day or two in advance in the fall to check if they are open and offering food.
Required for autumn
Charged headlamp
The day is quickly drawing to a close. Always carry a headlamp, even if you plan to get home in the morning. A delay of 1 hour can leave you in complete darkness.
Down jacket
If you stop for a rest above 2000 meters, the cold will set in immediately. A light down jacket that packs into your backpack is your best friend.
Sturdy shoes
Morning frost makes rocks and stones extremely slippery. Hard-soled shoes (Vibram) are mandatory.
Thermos with hot drink
Water in a regular bottle becomes icy cold. Hot tea gives energy and warms you up during breaks on the ridge.
Infrastructure check
Check on the concessionaire's website whether the cable car is working, or whether you have to rely on a car/walk to get there. Banderishka meadow.
Gloves and hat
The metal ropes on Koncheto or other secured sections are icy in the morning. Thin gloves will save your hands.
