In the age of instant messaging and Instagram stories, postcards remain a romantic symbol of the past. They're that physical memento that says, "I was thinking of you while I was there.".In Bulgaria, these little pieces of paper have a rich history that began in the 19th century. Today, they are experiencing a renaissance, connecting generations through the love of travel and the mountains. Bansko, with its centuries-old culture, has always been part of this tradition.
📜 The story: From the coat of arms to the illustration
The path of the postcard in our country is a mirror of the development of the country itself.
- 1879 – The Beginning: Soon after the Liberation, the first "open letters" appeared - sheets with a printed stamp and state coat of arms, but without pictures.
- 1892 – The first illustration: An emblematic moment in history. The first illustrated postcard was published on the occasion of the First Bulgarian Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition in Plovdiv.
- 1897 – The Heyday: The law allowed private individuals to publish illustrated versions, which unleashed the creativity of photographers and artists.
- 1905 – The Standard: The classic split-back format is introduced – a place for an address and a place for a message, which we still know today.
🏔️ Bansko in the frame: Memories from the 20th century
As the pearl of Pirin, Bansko is one of the most photographed towns in Bulgarian history. The old postcards from Bansko (especially those issued between the 1960s and 1980s) are today a valuable collector's item.
Most often, the lenses have captured the grandeur of Holy Trinity Church„, the tranquility of the Glazne River and the monument to the poet Nikola Vaptsarov. The collective panoramas with the tiled roofs of the old neighborhoods carry the spirit of a time when tourism was slower, quieter and more contemplative.
💌 The tradition of the “Mountain Greeting”
Before the digital age, the ritual was mandatory: you buy a postcard from the kiosk downtown, sit down in the tavern, order tea, and write warm words about the fresh air and the ski slopes. Then you drop it in the mailbox, knowing that it will bring a piece of mountain energy to your next few days after you yourself have returned home.
