- Kuklensko Lake, along which the trail winds, is small and often dries up in late summer, but its location among the marble and granite debris makes it very photogenic.
- Pirin Hut is one of the lowest located huts in the mountain (1640 m), nestled in dense forests, which gives it a completely different appearance compared to high-altitude alpine shelters.
🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
Since this is a trek connecting two remote huts, the logistics are a bit more specific and is best suited as part of a multi-day trek.
The start is from Begovitsa hut„. It is most easily reached from the town of Sandanski through the Popina Laka resort area. From Popina Laka to the hut there is a dirt road, suitable only for off-road vehicles, or a pleasant pedestrian path, which takes about 1.5 – 2 hours.
The end point, Pirin hut„, is accessible on foot (and with very good off-road jeeps) from the village of Pirin or from the area of the town of Melnik / village of Rozhen.
🥾 Description of the route
1. From the Begovitsa hut along the river
The hike starts from the hut on a well-trodden path. At the beginning, the yellow marking (for Pirin hut) runs parallel to the blue one (for Tevno Lake). You move against the current of the Begovitsa River. You cross a wooden bridge (Dakov Bridge), the slope is relatively gentle and pleasant for warming up.
2. The crossroads and the separation of markings
The key point in the first stage is the fork, which is reached after about 1.5 hours of walking. There are signposts on one of the stakes of the winter marking. Here the blue marking continues straight towards Tevno Lake, and you should go right on the yellow markings.
3. To Kuklensko Lake and the saddle
After the fork, the serious climb begins. The trail gains altitude, passes by the beautiful Kuklensko Lake and heads towards the pass (saddle) between the peaks of Zabat and Kuklite. Reaching this point (about 2600 m above sea level) is the culmination of the route and offers breathtaking panoramas.
4. Descent to Pirin Hut„
After crossing the saddle, the long and sometimes steep descent into the valley begins. The terrain changes from rocky high mountain pastures to dense coniferous and mixed forests until you reach the hospitable meadow where the Pirin hut is located.
🛖 Basic information about the site (Pirin Hut)
The hut is a massive three-story building, known for its tranquility and isolation from the mass tourist flow.

Orientation: In the area of the fork and pastures towards Kuklensko Lake, the markings can be easily lost in fog, so keep a close eye on the stone pyramids (little men) and be sure to carry a charged GPS tracker on your phone.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I climb the peaks of Zubat and Kuklite during this route?
Yes! When you reach the saddle between the two peaks, you can deviate from the yellow markings. There is no colored paint up towards the peaks, but there are clear stone pyramids. The climb to each of the peaks takes about 20-30 minutes in the direction from the saddle.
Is the route suitable for one day?
The distance between the two huts is easily covered in one day (about 5 hours). The problem is logistical – how will you get to Begovitsa hut in the morning and how will you get home from Pirin hut in the evening. Therefore, it is recommended to stay overnight in the huts.
