Unlike the long and exhausting treks from the foothills to the peaks, Route No. 18 is a short but key connecting segment in the heart of the mountain. It forms the vital link between the iconic Tevno Ezero shelter and the strategic Begovishka Porta saddle (Begovichi Preval). From this gate, tourists can descend to Begovitsa hut, head to Pirin hut, or continue their tour through the Spanopolski Circus. Here's what you need to know about this short but very panoramic stage.

💡 Interesting information
- Begovishke porta (2610 m) is one of the most important saddles in Pirin. It separates the basins of the Begovitsa (to the south) and Mozgovitsa (to the west) rivers, serving as a natural border between the peaks of Kamenitsa and Yalovarnika.
- As you walk towards the gate, behind you is the majestic rock profile of Momin Dvor Peak, which looks out into the waters of Tevno Lake.
- Although short, the route passes entirely above 2,500 meters above sea level, making it part of the mountain's true alpine belt.
🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
This route is entirely intramountainous and there is no car access to it.
The starting point is the Tevno Ezero shelter. To get there, you must have already done a serious hike from the Vihren hut (about 6-7 hours), the Demyanitsa hut (about 3.5 hours), the Bezbog hut (about 4 hours) or the Begovitsa hut (about 3.5 hours up). Route No. 18 is usually the start of someone's hike the next day after spending the night at the shelter.
🥾 Description of the route
1. From the shelter through the moraines
The hike starts directly from the Tevno Lake shelter gate. You head west/southwest, following the blue and yellow painted markers. The trail almost immediately begins to gain altitude, passing through clusters of large stones (moraines). The slope is not steep, but requires caution to avoid slipping or getting your foot stuck.
2. Reaching the Begovishta Gate
After about 30-40 minutes of moderate climbing on the rocks, you will come out on the wide and windy saddle – Begoviška Porta. Here you will see a large metal stake with signposts. From this place an impressive view opens to the south towards the deep valley of the Begovitsa River and the sharp peaks of the Kamenitsa peak to your left.
🛖 Basic information about the site (Begoviška Porta)
The gate itself is simply a geographical point and an important crossroads. It offers no shelter.
- 📌 Tip: If the weather is bad (fog, storm), wait in the "Tevno Lake" shelter. Orientation along the moraines to the gate in zero visibility is extremely difficult and dangerous.
- ☀️ Season: Optimal period for crossing: July – September.
- 💧 Water: There is no water at the gate itself. Fill your water bottles from the tap behind the Tevno Lake shelter before leaving.
- 📱 Scope: There is usually good mobile coverage at Begoviška Porta, unlike the shelter itself down in the circus.
⚠️ Important to know
Although the distance is only 1 kilometer, don't underestimate the terrain. The rocks can be very treacherous and slippery early in the morning due to dew or if it has rained overnight.
Winter conditions: The area between Tevno Lake and Begovishka Porta turns into a snowy desert in winter. The markings are hidden under the snowdrifts, and the crossing is only suitable for people with snowshoes/skis and avalanche equipment.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Where can I continue from Begoviška Porta?
There are several possibilities:
– To the south (along the blue marking): Steep descent to the Begovitsa hut (about 2 hours).
– To the south (along the yellow markings): Long panoramic hike to the Pirin hut (about 5 hours).
– To the west: To the "Spano Pole" shelter and the "Sinanitsa" hut (about 3.5 – 4 hours).
Is it suitable for small children?
If the children have already managed to reach Tevno Lake (which is an achievement in itself), these extra 40 minutes will not be a problem for them. However, you will need to help them pass the larger stone blocks.
