💡 Interesting information

  • 🌊 Popovo Lake: The route passes by the largest and deepest glacial lake in the Pirin Mountains.
  • 🛤 Ancient path: The Demirkapi Gate (Iron Gate) was in the past a key trade route connecting the Mesta Valley with that of the Struma River.
  • 🍷 Climatic contrast: You start the hike with the cold breeze of the Alpine belt and end with the Mediterranean breeze and the famous wine of Melnik.

🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)

Since the route is linear (you don't return to the starting point), the logistics require advance planning.

  • By car to Gotse Delchev Chalet: An 11-kilometer asphalt road leads from the town of Dobrinishte to the Gotse Delchev hut. There is free, separate parking there, but the road is narrow and has many bends.
  • By lift to Bezbog hut: From the Gotse Delchev hut you can take the chairlift (about 30 min. ride) to save nearly 2.5 hours of steep hiking through the forest.
  • Return from Melnik: From Melnik you can take a bus to Sandanski or Blagoevgrad, from where you can make a connection to Bansko/Dobrinishte, or use taxi services.

🥾 Description of the route

The route is completely marked with green tourist marking. It is most often divided into three stages:

Stage 1: Dobrinishte – Bezbog hut„
Most tourists choose to reach the Gotse Delchev hut by transport and use the lift to the Bezbog hut (2240 m), where they spend their first night, enjoying the sunset over Lake Bezbog.

Stage 2: Bezbog hut – Pirin hut (6-7 hours)
This is the real alpine part. The trail passes through the short but steep "Dushevadka", reaches Popovo Lake and begins a gentle climb to the Demirkapiyska Gate (2480 m). From there, a long, in places rocky descent follows along Argirovo and Mitrovo Lakes. Following the course of the Demirkapiyska River, the trail enters the coniferous belt and reaches the "Pirin" hut (1640 m), where the second night is spent.

Stage 3: Pirin hut – town of Melnik (5-6 hours)
The transition continues smoothly downwards. The coniferous forests give way to deciduous ones, and the climate becomes noticeably drier and warmer. The trail passes by the Rozhen Monastery (worth a short detour), enters the picturesque Melnik Rock Pyramids and ends directly on the sandy scree in the town of Melnik.

🏡 Basic information about the sites (Bezbog Hut and Pirin Hut)

📞 Phone: Bezbog hut: 0884 949 985 / Pirin hut: 0893 255 125

⚠️ Important to know

  • Water: The second stage is rich in water sources, but during the third stage (from the Pirin hut to Melnik) water is scarce. Stock up on at least 2-3 liters per person when leaving the hut.
  • Winter conditions: The route through the Demirkapi Gate is avalanche-prone in winter and requires specialized alpine equipment and experience. It is not recommended for ordinary tourists outside the summer season.
  • Scope: In the area of the Demirkapi Circus and part of the valley towards the Pirin hut, mobile coverage is weak or non-existent.
