- The Kazanite region retains snow year-round, hence the name of the microglacier under Vihren Peak.
🚗 How to get there? (Logistics)
The starting point is Banderitsa chalet„. It is reached by a well-maintained, albeit narrow in places, asphalt road from the town of Bansko (about 14 km). There is a separate parking lot in front of the hut, but keep in mind that during the active summer season (July-August) it fills up extremely quickly early in the morning. An alternative option is to leave your car further down or use the buses that travel from Bansko to the Vihren hut (which is 2 km up the road).
🥾 Description of the route
1. The Beginning: From the Hut to the Forest
The hike begins just above the Banderitsa hut (north of it), following the green markings. At the beginning, the trail enters an ancient coniferous forest. The slope here is relatively gentle and serves as an excellent warm-up. After about 30-40 minutes, the tall trees gradually give way to dense scrub and open meadows.
2. Little Kazan and the first views
As soon as you leave the squat belt, the bottom of the Malkia Kazan circus opens up before you. On the left rises the sheer northeastern wall of Vihren Peak, and on the right – the marble Kutelo. Here the path begins to meander up a stone „wall“ in the form of serpentines. The section is steep and covered with scree – it requires steady steps.
3. The Great Kazan and the Kazana Shelter„
Overcoming the steep slope, you come out into the Big Kazan. On the right you will notice the wooden shelter "Kazana" (2445 m above sea level). This is an ideal place for a short break and photos. Here the route merges with the path coming from the "Vihren" hut.
4. The final assault to Premkata
The last part is a steep climb straight up between Kutelo and Vihren. Once you step on the saddle (2665 m above sea level), a breathtaking panorama opens up to the west towards the Vlahina River basin and an endless sea of peaks.
🛖 Basic information about the objects
The Premkata saddle is a crossroads in the high Pirin Mountains, and the Kazana shelter on the way is the only place for shelter.
- 📌 Tip: It is always windy on Premkata, put on your windbreaker even before you go out onto the saddle.
- 🕒 Working hours: The route is open constantly, but the Kazana shelter is without a hutkeeper (it is only used for emergency situations).
- ☀️ Season: Recommended from July to September.
- 🛏️ Beds: The shelter has sleeping bags for about 4-5 people (only in case of extreme need).
- 🐕 Dogs: Allowed, but only on occasion (Pirin National Park rule).
- ☎️ Emergency phone: 112 (connects to the EMS).
⚠️ Important to know
The terrain is uncompromisingly Pirin - stones, scree and rocky ledges. There is no water on the route., so be sure to stock up on at least 1.5 – 2 liters per person from the hut. Sturdy hiking shoes and sun protection (cream, glasses, hat) are mandatory.
Attention: During winter and early spring, the Kazanite area is extremely avalanche-prone. Passing then is only possible for experienced climbers with specialized equipment!
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are there any fountains or springs along the way?
No. The route is completely dry. You can only get water in the Banderitsa hut area before the start.
Is the route suitable for beginners and children?
Due to the large elevation gain, rocky terrain, and scree, the route is more for people with good physical fitness. Children with mountain experience could handle it, but it requires increased attention.
Where can I continue after Premkata?
To the left is the final steep climb to the top of Vihren (following the red markings). To the right is the road to Kutelo and the adrenaline-pumping marble ledge of Koncheto.
