Rules in Pirin National Park: With a dog, drone or tent in Pirin? 2026

A tourist with a dog on a leash on a trail in Pirin National Park, following the rules.

Pirin is not just a mountain for photos – it is a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means that strict rules apply here, which have nothing to do with those in a city park or at a campsite by the sea. Every summer, social media is ablaze with the same dramas: „"Why was I fined for a tent?"“ or „"Why can't I bathe my dog in the lake?"“.

To save yourself the fines (which, by the way, start at a "modest" 500 leva) and unnecessary conflicts with the park guards, we have prepared this guide. Here is what the etiquette is and what the current rules are. rules in Pirin National Park for the 2026 season.

1. Tents and „Wild Camping“: Dream vs. Reality

This is the most frequently violated rule. The idea of waking up right next to Muratovo Lake sounds romantic, but in Pirin, bivouacing and lighting fires outside of designated areas is strictly prohibited. And no, "me only for one night" is not an excuse to the rangers.

Where CAN you pitch a tent?

To avoid waking up with a license in your pocket, head to the areas around the huts. There it is allowed:

  • Banderitsa Hut: There is a separate and legal campsite.
  • Demyanitsa Hut: You can pitch a tent near the hut.
  • Shelter Tevno Lake: There is a special exception here – if the shelter is full, camping is allowed in the evening, but you must have set up camp in the morning.
  • Bezbog Hut and Kamenitsa Hut: They also offer regulated places.

It is prohibited: Pitching tents near the Banderishki Lakes, Sinanishki Lake, or in the high alpine zone. Fines there are guaranteed.

2. Swimming in lakes: Why is Instagram wrong?

The photo of an influencer swimming in the Eye looks great, but it's a real environmental crime. Glacial lakes are closed and extremely sensitive ecosystems.

Why is it a problem? Sunscreen, sweat, and even laundry detergent residue on your clothes kill microorganisms in lakes. The addition of organic matter leads to eutrophication (waterlogging). If we want lakes to stay blue, not green and toady, just don't go in them.

3. Pets: With a dog on Vihren?

Can you take your four-legged friend to Pirin? Yes, but only on occasion. And this is not a whim of the park administration, but a matter of life and death.

The risks you don't think about:

  • Wild animals: Pirin is home to wild goats. If your dog chases a herd, it could fall into a precipice or lead the animals into dangerous terrain.
  • The narrow paths: In places like "The Horse", a restless dog can push not only you, but also other tourists into the abyss.
  • Moraines: Sharp granite often cuts the pads of urban dogs' paws. If your dog is not prepared, wear special dog shoes.

4. Drones: Buzzing in the Heart of Silence

Officially, flying a drone in a National Park requires a permit. In practice, if you are filming for personal use and are not being cheeky, you will rarely have a problem, but follow the etiquette:

The noise stresses out birds of prey and wild goats. Besides, most people come to Pirin for the silence, not to listen to the sound of a „swarm of bees“ overhead. Shoot fast, high, and away from the crowds at the top.

5. Summary table of rules

Activity Status Comment
Lighting a fire FORBIDDEN Allowed only in regulated fireplaces in front of the huts.
Gas hobs ALLOWED You can use them anywhere, but with caution.
Picking flowers FORBIDDEN The Edelweiss and the Pirin poppy are protected species.
Herbs and mushrooms ALLOWED In moderate quantities for personal use.
Swimming in lakes FORBIDDEN Be careful with the water you drink in the huts below!

The Golden Rule: Leave No Trace

The most important rule in Pirin is simple: „"Take only pictures, leave only footprints."“ All trash – including banana peels (which take years to decompose here) and wet wipes (which are pure plastic) – must go down with you back to the Bansko.

The mountain has no cleaners and there is no magical way for your waste to disappear from 2500 meters above sea level. Be cool tourists, not just users.
