Why choose this route?
This section is the most accessible in the high part of Pirin. It is preferred by:
- 👨👩👧👦 Families with young children: The trail is safe, interesting, and short enough not to bore the little ones.
- 🧓 Adult tourists: The lack of steep climbs makes it ideal for seniors.
- 🌲 Nature lovers: The opportunity to see the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria without any effort.
Logistics: How do we get to the launch?
Direction selection
Since Vihren hut (1950 m) is located higher than Banderitsa hut (1810 m), the classic and more pleasant option is the descent. This way you will enjoy nature with almost no physical exertion.
🚧 Important for drivers (Season 2026)
During the active summer season (July-August, as well as weekends in September), the road from Bansko to the chalets is closed to private cars between 08:00 and 16:00. The barrier is usually at "“The Shiligarnika. We recommend leaving your car there and catching one of the regular buses or taking the lift to Banderishka meadow.
Route description: Two options
To get from Vihren Hut to Banderitsa Hut, you have two main options, and we highly recommend the first one because of the encounter with the centuries-old tree.
Option 1: Through the forest and the Baykushevata mura (Recommended)
This is the classic eco-trail. It starts directly below the parking lot of Vihren hut, to the right of the asphalt road (there is a clear sign and yellow markings).
🌲 Encounter with eternity:
The trail descends steeply, but briefly, through a beautiful, shady forest. In just 15–20 minutes you will reach Baikusheva mura. This is not just a tree, but a silent witness to Bulgarian history. At over 1300 years old, it is a “peer” of our country. The place is wonderfully ennobled with wooden stairs and a photo platform that preserves the roots of the giant.
After taking pictures, you continue down the steps and the path, which after another 10-15 minutes takes you directly to the meadow in front of Banderitsa hut.
Option 2: On the asphalt road
This option is about 2.5 km long. It is smoother, but much more boring and has risks due to traffic. The only reason to choose the asphalt is if you are baby stroller or bicycles. In that case, please move firmly to the left, against traffic!
Banderitsa Hut: The delicious finale
Banderitsa Hut is one of the oldest and largest chalets in Pirin. It is located on a large meadow by the river and is the perfect place for lunch after a walk.

Water, shade and safety
💧 Water and Shade
This is one of the most shady routes, passing entirely through a forest – ideal for hot days. There is plenty of water – you will find fountains in front of both the Vihren hut and the Banderitsa hut.
📱 Connection
The coverage of all mobile operators is excellent and stable (4G/5G) along the entire route, as you are close to the road.
⚠️ Be careful with the stairs
The wooden stairs around the Baykushevata mura can be wet and slippery, especially in the morning or after rain. Hold children's hands and use the railings.
