He made a bet with friends (according to other versions – to impress his beloved) that he would climb the peak not along the goat paths, but directly along the sheer cliffs, where no human foot had ever set foot.

The young man walked up with ease, as if dancing on the stones. He reached almost the very edge. In a moment of triumph, he turned back to shout to the people below: „"Look, masters!"“. But whether he was blinded by the sun reflected in the white Pirin marble, or the stone fell under his foot – no one knows. The glassworker flew down, and the rocks, sharp as the glass he cut every day, remained forever named after him – Jamdzhiev.

The Alpine Challenge

Today, the Jamdzhiev Ridge is a classic alpine traverse (difficulty category II-III according to UIAA), which attracts experienced mountaineers like a magnet. This is not a marked tourist trail. There are no beaten paths here, just rock, air and adrenaline.

⚠️ The "Only Up" Law: The most important rule for the Jamjiev edge is: pass it only in the direction of ascent (from Banderitsa hut to Vihren peak). Going down the edge is extremely dangerous, as you can't see where you're going and it's very easy to drift into the sheer chutes. Once you've conquered the summit, descend along the classic "King's Trail.".
⚠️ The false sense of security: In the summer, the marble is dry and has good traction, which lures unprepared tourists. Make no mistake – there are sections where you have to use your hands (the so-called. scrambling), and a fall can be fatal.
⚠️ No water: There is not a single drop of water on the entire edge, and the white rocks act like an oven in the sun. Bring at least 2 liters of fluids.
⚠️ Weather conditions: Never set out when rain or thunder is forecast. The wet Pirin marble becomes slippery as ice, and the sharp edge is a natural lightning rod. In winter, the route is only accessible to climbers with full equipment (crawlers, ice axes, rope).
