The written church is located about 7 kilometers southwest of the city. Razlog, in close proximity to the complex "“Pirin Golf. Access is easy, as the site itself can be reached by car on an asphalted and partially dirt road, or by a pleasant walk through the centuries-old pine forests of Northern Pirin.
Two eras inscribed in each other
What it does The Written Church in Razlog What makes this such a unique architectural and historical monument is the fact that two separate religious buildings have been discovered in one place, inscribed one within the other, but built in completely different historical periods.
Early Christian Basilica (5th – 6th century)
During the archaeological research, which began in 2006 under the leadership of Prof. Tsvetanka Komitova, an early Christian basilica was discovered in the foundations of the complex. According to experts, it dates back to the end of Antiquity (5th-6th century) and was most likely part of a larger and earlier monastery complex. This is categorical evidence of the deep Christian roots of the local population in the first centuries after the official adoption of the religion in the Roman Empire.
The medieval temple (12th – 14th century)
Centuries later, during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, a new, smaller, single-nave and single-apse building was erected on the ruins of the old basilica. It is its outline that is most visible today. The complex testifies to the strong continuity and spiritual significance of this holy place for the inhabitants of the Razlog Valley throughout the different eras.
Why is it called the “Written” Church?
The name of the temple is not accidental. During the excavations around the entrance and inside the church, archaeologists have discovered numerous fragments of rich mural decoration (painted walls). These pieces of plaster reveal the presence of masterfully painted geometric and stylized ornaments. Because of this beauty, preserved in the memories and finds, the local population began to call the ancient site “The Painted Church”.
In addition to the frescoes, Christian burials, fragments of household ceramics, as well as an extremely valuable bronze cross (encolpion) from the 11th century were discovered during the excavations, which further confirms the significance of the temple in the region.
The site has been partially restored and preserved. When walking among the ancient stone walls, please be careful and do not climb on the ruins. The site has been declared a cultural monument and its preservation depends on each visitor.
The Mystery of the Neighboring Temples: The White Church and Saint Nicholas
The written church was not an isolated sanctuary. It is part of a larger spiritual ensemble in the Krushe area (part of Betolovoto). Just a few meters away from it are the foundations of a late medieval temple, called by the locals “The White Church” (since only white mortar was found upon its discovery, without frescoes.) The ruins of a smaller church dedicated to “Saint Nicholas” were also discovered nearby.
The presence of three churches in such a small perimeter is clear evidence that during the Middle Ages, life was bustling here and there was a large, economically strong settlement, the secrets of which archaeologists have yet to fully reveal.
